Has anyone had problems with the electic 4x4 switch on the Larime package? I am torn on the manual and the electric 4x4 engagement. Had problems with my Ford not engaging when I really needed it to.

When I ordered my 2005, I made sure it didn't have this option. I've seen other trucks, with this type of electronic device, that have quit working. Honestly... How much effort does it take to reach down and move the lever in and out of 4WD??? :D

I had a ford that would not engage when it got in single digits. Even though it was a ford I still would DEFINITLY get the manual engagement.

I have a MOY 2003 with this option, and can not find any fault with it at all! It's very fast going in and out, and seems positive as well.

This is my first of many 4x4's with an electric shift (I was skeptical too) ... ... ... ... ... . 63,000 miles, plenty of "in an out" and no problems yet.

Yes, I use four wheel drive :D

on edit here, but I've just got to wonder how many of those having problems never use four wheel drive, siezing up the servo an related linkage  If you remember back in the day, the lockout hubs caused problems for the "occasional" 4 wheel drive guy because the u-joints would sieze from lack of use and in extreeme cases the ring gear would rust on the side that had no grease :-laf

I have had my o4. 5 for a year and have not had any trouble with it, I like the extra space on the floor and have had this in two other trucks one Dodge and a gmc without any trouble. I think it is just a personal preference, it took me awhile to get used to it. take your pick both seem to work.

Have had my truck a little over a year and have used the electric shift proably 45 times in that time frame and never had a problem. I'm happy with mine so far. :D

Nope. No problems Had to throw it in to 4x4 once at the Max speed while driving in icy conditions gave no problems and was very happy with it. 2 cars went in the ditch while I sailed thru the problem bridge. (the Cops were there already) Love the on the Fly electric shift!

I was skeptical too. I have the electric shifter and I am in and out of 4X4 HI 8 to 10 times a day, minimum. Sometimes just creeping through a field and sometimes at 60+mph. With 210 days of winter and owning the truck for two winters now, that would put me between 1,680 to 2,100 turns of the little knob. Not one problem yet. I had the manual shifter on my '95 12 valve and I am glad I went with the lazy knob this time.

No problem with mine. I use it every single day at least once as I have a steep, long gravel driveway and it has never failed, no matter how cold (-16F) this winter. I too had a Ferd that sometimes would not go in and a few times would not come out. This ain't no Ford. On the other hand, I never had a Ford bought back either. I did have one really bad one but they took care of it and gave me a great trade-in deal when I got frustrated.

I was skeptical about the electronic switch, but it was part of a package that had things I wanted more. Have had it nearly a year now, use the 4X4 on a regular basis. Hi and Lo work with nothing irregular at all. Reliable and slick so far. When my 3 yr old daughter rides up front, it gives her more leg room without the shifter. My general philosophy leans toward more mechanical and less electronic, but that is not the way with much on ANY vehicle these days. I bought the extended warranty on my truck, so it is not my problem or expense other than $50 deductible for 7 years/100,000 miles.

Only thing I wonder about is how to get the transaxle into Neutral in a tow situation. My 01 needed towed several times due to lift pump/fuel tank problems. So far no need to ever do that with this truck. My 01 did not start acting up that way until around 23,000 miles. Have about 13,000 on this truck so far.

TexBamBam - I have had 3 vehicles with the electronic transfer case shift with zero problems, and I use 4wd often. I too prefer simplicity with less parts to fail, however I got the auto trans, so I wanted a clear floor 'hump' which is really nice. If I had gotten a manual transmission I would have opted for the mechanical transfer case shift - because you're losing that floor space anyway... That's my advice - if you're getting an auto trans, get the electronic shift and enjoy the free floor space. Then you can get one of the cool 1 piece floor mats for the front, like the catch-all xtremes, etc.

I'll add my $0. 02.

I have absolutly no complaints about my electronic shift for moving between 2-high and 4-high. For moving into 4-low, I'd much prefer a stick on the floor. I find it frustrating to just have that little light blinking at me telling me it can't shift into low range. With the stick, you can feel exactly what's happening in the transfer case.

Since I don't spend too much time in 4-low in this truck, I guess I'm ok with that.

This is the first truck I have ever had with the electric shift. Two previous Dodges (with a floor lever and CAD), and my F350 with manual hubs and a floor lever.

THe truck I had originally ordered had a floor shift, and when I got this one instead, I was like, well, OK... .

That being said, this thing shifts virtually instantly and flawlessly, in and out. My Ford lever also shift instantly, but the 97 Ram sometimes took up to 5 seconds shift in with that lever and the center-axle-disconnect, and longer to go back to 2WD.

Now that I have this little switch (just like with power windows, etc) it would be hard to go back. :)

On edit: I have not tried 4LO yet, but if you put the transmission in neutral, foot and brake, shift into 4LO as you remove your foot from the brake and roll a few feet, she *should* pop right in.

This is my first one. It's a dream I like it because it's nice for the wife to use We travel between So Ca and Wa st year round sometime she takes the truck alone, and with elec shift on the fly it's real user friendly.

Mac
