I am looking at purchasing a built auto in the near future, and have been horrified by some of the threads from 2005 about ATS, namely one case where it took three trannys to get it right, no matter what the circumstances. I live in Florida, so I need a situation where a shop says," you just need a built 48RE? Is that all? We've got a bulletproof unit ready to go right here!" Then They would swap mine out for it and after a few adjustments on road test or two it works exaxctly as it should for 6 or 8 grand! That's a lot of money for a stupid descendant of a torqueflite 727. this is 2007, or am I dreaming? How much power and torque can a new 68rfe handle? I heard they are 3500 bucks new. I want to mostly street drive my truck with an occasional tow of 5,000 lbs, and an occasional trip down the drag strip. I want it to hold up under 4wd launches if I desire, and be an all around unit where I don't have to worry about it again. Dirving around town I'd probably just be developing about 400 horses, but would turn it up on the track. I want lower speed lock-up and unlock, a civilized shift firmness, and a durable unit.

The 68RFE's are totally computer controlled so that's not really doable. I think ATS makes a conversion kit for an allison into the dodge.

Suncoast does the conv. as well. I hear good things about them most of the time. unfortunately 6 grand is a "normal" quote for such a transmission the HP figure isn't as important as the torque #s though. lots of info available if you do a search! good luck!!

If you do boost 4WD launces you will need at least billet input, and output at that HP level. Plus a billet/laminated flexplate.

Some of the fastest street/strip trucks have Suncoast 47/48RE's in em.

Doesn't Stuckey's Racing "for give me if I murdered that name" use the sun coast Trans? I know the front of that trucks front end lifts off the ground a little when it launches...

I have a full billet, fully built suncoast in my 07. I run 37/13. 50's on a dually and run a 15. 5. I live in south texas and got mine from Jeff Prince. He runs the same transmission in his race truck running in the low 10's. He's also running the same ones in his other two trucks with twins. I have not had any problems even under full power towing boats and cars. When it was all said and done, I spent nearly 8000 but it was the best upgrade yet and probably the one that I am most proud of. If you order it (if you already havent, sorry for bringing this thread up if so) be sure to specify how you want the converter, they usually send you one that is a little loose for my taste unless you are running a turbo with alot of lag, then it will help a little with spooling. Luckily Jeff helped me out with the converter and I got what I needed. I plan on running the same setup on my race truck as soon as I get everything else finished up on it and get it running how I want it. I have a 6spd with a dual disk now since thats what I already had but im sure I'll get tired of the shifting.

I think ATS makes a conversion kit for an allison into the dodge.

As I hear it, the hot ticket for the D-max crowd is to run 48RE's now on the strip. Apparently the electronics in the Allison aren't fast enough, so the trannies eat clutch packs going down the track.

I've seen some pretty impressive trucks running Sun-Coast. That's what will be going in my truck.
