Any solutions to FVS (Floppy Visor Syndrome)?

Like a lot of other people, the sun visors on my truck started to flop and drop on their own a few years back. Years ago I think I read something here that they could be fixed for about $15 each. But recently a friend who has the same problem on his truck, also a 2003 said the dealers charge in the neighborhood of $70 each for the visors. So I broke out the masking tape and taped the plastic rod on the part of the visor that snaps into the clip. When I rotated the visor I was surprised to see that the bottom half of the clip slid down from the headliner. It was easy to put back in, but it seems to be a snug fit and doesn't appear to lock into place. Does anyone know if replacing the clip will fix the visor, and could this be the $15 fix I think I remember from years ago? And if it is, could the existing clip be fixed by applying some rubber cement or other friction increasing material to the slide/spline assembly?

I did some searching on the Internet and saw prices ranging from $89 -$129 in posts from people with the same problem. One poster said they went to the dealer and the replacement looked different from the original and also looked cheap.

Mine was identical as far as I could tell, looks fine to this day ! Doubt I can find the receipt anymore, but will poke after work tomorrow a bit .

A standard visor is less than $30 but when you get one with a lighted vanity light it's more like $130.

I had to replace both of mine and I went the OEM route. I was disappointed in one respect in that the new driver's side visor did not come with the cold weather start instructions. The dealer said that this was the replacement. I miss the originality so I at least kept the old ones in a box.

I'd be worried about cracking or breaking the rod. Putting a bit of masking tape around the rod where it snaps in to the clip works, but it doesn't really fix the problem. Too much masking tape also causes the clip to pull out of the headliner. I also noticed there is a small crack in the clip, probably because of too much masking tape. When I get a chance to run by the dealer I'll get another one and see of that fixes the visor issue altogether.

If your talking about the clip that holds the visor to the liner, my 2nd Gen went through those clips every year or two. I had several spares at all times. That and the defroster knobs.

Yeah, that's the clip. Does replacing it fix the floppy visor problem? I notice that when I press up against the clip it is a lot tighter and doesn't drop down. I'm hoping that's the problem; it's a lot cheaper to replace that than the entire visor.

I've never experianced any issues with either of my 3rd Gens, only the 2nd Gen, but it was obvious when they broke.

The clip doesn't really add/contribute to the tension that keeps the visor from rotating. The clip is in place to keep the visor from flopping up (vertical not rotational) and down/moving around when it's in the stored or forward position. tension between the visor itself and the rod that goes through it is what keeps the visor from rotating around the axis of the rod. Anything that can be done to decrease the clearance between the rod and visor or bending the rod will help along this line. If you can cut a small diameter rod (music wire) and shove it into the visor, where the rod goes through, to tighten up the clearance it should stop rotating on it's own. Just like any rotating object, on a central pivot point, when moved enough times clearances increase.

OK, I see now what you meant, I was talking about the other end that clips it to the head liner. That end is screwed to the head liner, the clip on the other end is what I was refering to.
