Have any of you do it yourselfers changed a VP-44 yet? Does it require any special tools? I'm just curious as to what is involved.

It's a breeze

Alan, I did one a couple of weeks ago on a friends 98. 5 that already had a reman. pump on it. I didn't use any special tools. I'd say a srevice manual and a small quality puller is all thats needed. Snap On makes a puller just for the B series injecter pump, it's # SP504, under 30 clams.

Last question, Is that done after the pump is off the truck or is the pump pressed out backwards from the mount. If you can give me a brief description of the sequence I would appreciate it. I'm not where I can get to the service manual.

Alan, here's my question. Do you have a bad pump, and how was it diagnosed ? After you remove the APPS, air horn, connector, all fuel/injector lines and pump mounting bolts. Remove the crankcase breather (it unscrews CCW) this will give you access to the pump retainer nut. Undo the nut and attach the puller useing M8 X 1. 25 bolts. Them carefully press the pump shaft out of the gear.

I'll send you a PM with my email, if you send me an address, I can try to scan the pump removal procedure and send it to you.

I have a manual down here, just not with me. I'm trying to help a bud. I don't know that his pump is bad, he just thinks it might be. I'll test it later today or tomorrow. The info on the gear puller is really good info that I needed to know. I'll get the SP504 in the next day or so. Do the bolts come with it or are they purchased separately? That should be my last questionl.

Alan ...

Once you pull the gear and unbolt the mounting nuts --- the pump slide aft out of the front cover ,... . make sure the keyway on the pump shaft is at the 12 o'clock position before pulling the gear and the pump ... if the key is loose you'll have better luck keeping it from falling into the case.

Have fun!

Thanks, Mate. I'm hoping we don't have to pull it. I'll check everything else first. I'm hoping it's the lift pump. I have a spare in my box and can get him going pretty quickly if that's it.

Alan, I emailed you instructions from the factory service manual for pump replacement. Hope you be able to upload them. Yes the bolts are included as part of the puller. Let us know what you find out.

Weir Cummin, Thanks for the instructions. I know that was a lot of work to get those to me. Turns out that it was algae in the system from a bad fuel stop. We got the mess cleaned up, cleaned lines and changed filters and put is some fresh fuel and algae killer and a bottle of Stanadyne for good measure. He's on his way. I wanted the instructions so that I could see any special tools we may have had to have before I got away from a phone book and parts stores. Thanks again, guys. Dean, You are the man.

Alan, what algae killer did you use and where did you get it? Sounds like a good PM thing to do during the summer here in the humid south. TIA
