Lost tach and got a code P1693. Got it reset once, but it came back the next day. Stumbled a couple times. :{

Looked it up and it doesn't mean a thing. DRB-III showed a crank sensor code. :confused:

Stealership said the sensors are a DC thing and not Cummins. :--)

Set me back $53 for the sensor and half a bazillion for labor. :mad:

Yes I have had this sensor go bad. I had it replaced and she is good as new. Mine would lose the tach and then stumble really bad. If I threw it in neutral I could keep it from stalling...

same here... changed it about a month ago, tach would go dead and truck would stall when I let the clutch out, now running fine. Took about an hour to change.

I had mine go a while back. I picked the part up from a Cummins shop in the area for $47 and replaced it myself. It's an easy fix.

I replaced the Crank Position Sensor on my '00 about a month ago too. My Tach was really jumpy for a few days, so I picked one up from Cummins for about $40 bucks. It is easy to replace on your own, but you have to remove the starter to get to it, because it's bolted to the side of the block behind the starter. Took me about 30min.

I think everyone has had this go bad at some point. I found out first time cleaning the engine. It pushes crud down onto sensor and bang, tach goes out, stumbles, sluggish power. Had DC replace first time under used warranty.

Did it again year later, but this time I powerwashed 2 times in sensor area, problem gone.

sounds familiar

mine went out with the powertrain control module. dealer couldn't figure it out. i told him what was wrong from research (asking you guys what the he!! was wrong with my truck) on this site. dealer wouldn't buy it. then i got ****** took it in and yelled until i got a mechanic to look at it. while they had the scan tool on it the tach went dead!! i yelled (really no b. s. here) "there you losers!! now do you see what is wrong?" all of a sudden i was treated a whole lot better and had about $1200 worth of warranty work done.

sometimes you gotta be firm. in case it goes out again i am glad to know it is not tough to swap out.

Me Too

Dealer was gonna replace my intrument panel. They didn't have the diesel mechanic look at my truck since it appeared to be gauge problem even though I told them I lost power when tackh dropped to zero.

I went to Cummins and they told me the problem was bad CPS... also bought an ISB electonics trouble-shooting manual that maps out ECM and gives step-by-step troubleshooting procedures.

When I brought info to dealer, mechanic told me I was wrong and the I had a separrate performance problem and a gauge problem. I didn't get ugly with the guy 'cause he told me his OBDII told him that I had some HP/TQ/boost increasing equipment on my truck. I had pulled all my stuff off, but the old cpmputer don't lie.

The gauge cluster was on backorder, so I turned truck in for performance rpoblem. Their diesel mechanic accurately diagnosed the CPS, replaced it, which fixed my tach problem as well.

Long story, good ending
