Many trucks over the years only needed a tow 1 time when a thrown front shaft ripped the side out of my trans and transfer case(50 MPH in 4wd). Wondering about others luck as I made it back home 1300 miles with a glitchy APPS. Do other failures leave the truck DOA? Or can it limp back home?

I had to have mine towed about 3 weeks ago. They found a Solenoid that locks the T/C went out. So when I put the Trans into drive and hit the throttle, i got no movment forward or reverse. They flat bedded it to the dealer and all is good now.

I had my old 94 towed about 4 times. The auto transmission kept tearng up. Each time they used a roll-back to get it to the shop.

The transmission cooler under the exhaust manifold was completely plugged. At first it would go about 20 miles before it burned up. The next time it didn't make it 1/2 a mile before it let go.

had my '01 5 months and i blew the slave cylinder. seeing as i don't shift without the clutch... ... she went on a roll-back.

damn, hurt like hell seeing that... ..... :{ :{ :{ :{

I blew the line out of my clutch slave cylinder too. Luckily I was about a mile from home and I just drove real slow. I had to have my truck flat bedded about a month ago when my truck ran itself out of fuel (bad lift pump I believe or not enough in the tank and too much acceleration). Had it towed back home where I righted the problem myself and replaced the lift pump the next week.

I've towed my truck twice both time I ran out of fuel with the guage showing just under a 1/4 tank:mad:

Both times I was w/o a 3/4 wrench to crack an injector line. I now have one in the truck.

Plus you have to use the AAA card every once in a while just to make sure it still works:D

Oh also for got towed it for this to:

Daimler-Chrysler is my vote for the cause.

Actually I have no idea at all. I will soon strip all the toys of the truck and give the stealer a crack at it. i have seen a steady change recently in the accuracy of the gauge.

the first time I ran out of fuel was summer 01 and the gauge was consistently showing me 1/8 for a tank with 8 gallons left in the tank. Second time was this past spring. Gone are the days of the gauge showing me a reserve. I filled up last week and had two gallons left in the tank with above a 1/4 tank on the gauge.

I guess it is time to take it in.

Mine just reads E all the time... . When I run out it will only be my fault. Really need to get a new sender I think. I have had several bad controllers(the thing that makes the warning sound) on caravans. Could be that too I guess.

Had to have her towed in October

The Dunlop Radial Rover got me home, but went flat a few days later, while waiting for the body shop to find room. . It had to be replaced. It was picked up on a Ford w/ flatbed. Sure looked like the CTD was having it's way with the back of the ford though. Oo.

Had my 97 towed by an F-150 after it started sucking air into the fuel line and I could not find where. The springs on my flatbed trailer were too weak for the truck, so we had to use a strap to tow it 45 miles to the nearest diesel shop. The 4. 6L in that ford is not nearly enough to tow a CTD up the hills in CO.

My first gen had to be towed when the radiator sprung a leak. They put it on an Isuzu rollback and it almost squashed the Isuzu. Front wheels came off the ground when loading the RAM. My second gen, with horse trailer attached, had to be towed near Tampa when the idler pulley assembly snapped off. They wouldn't tow with the horse in the trailer, so I had to find someone to come get the horse first. Then they took the driveshaft out of my five-speed truck before towing! Company policy! Naturally they did NOT reattach the driveshaft after dropping off the truck. then the dealer didn't have the idler pulley, so I got the parts guy to sell me one off of a truck waiting for internal engine parts, and installed it myself. The service manager was really HOT when he found out what happened as I cancelled the service and drove away!

Just had mine towed today, possible blown head gasket, it styll ran & I am sure it would make it to the dealer, but why risk it. I figured 135 bucks for a tow would be much cheaper then a siezed engine.

Having been a Class A motorhome owner (Cummins of course) in the past few years, tow cars have been of interest to me. At the time I owned a 93 Chev pu and 92 Burb, both having the 241 transfer case and and autos and both flat-towable with transfer case in neutral. I notice my 2002 HO 6 spd has a 241 transfer case as well so I assume it is flat-towable as well and seem to recall the truck manual agreeing. George

I know that where there is a will there is a way. Even tractors and buses can be towed was just wondering how many sensor/controller failures have left the DOA. I felt very good? about mine making it home with a bad APPS(6 failures in between Houston and NJ where pedal went limp).

thanks for all the replies

freak occurrence

I had a customer's truck that I just had put a new Suncoast Transmission in to drive for the weekend. I had just backed it up a steep and winding driveway and put it in park and shut her off. When I tried to restart it, no crank. The truck had an elaborate alarm system, and I had run out of things I could check there. So up the driveway came the hook, which wasn't big enough and its front wheels lifted when it tried to pick up the Ram. The second one came and took it to my shop, where after digging, I found that the starter solenoid wire had rubbed through in one spot and grounded. Had the truck been a manual transmission, the tow would have been avoided. The driveway was long enough for an adequate start.
