I think the con-ferrs are not so great. If I remember correctly you need to keep purchasing extra parts to actually use them for much. I bought a Kargo Master a few years ago for my Scout 800. The rack is good, rugged & cheap but the mounts are crap- they actually broke off while I was driving. Could have been bad. I'm planning on fabricating some supports to attach that rack on my 2500's Leer commercial cap when the snow goes away. There is also a place called D&C Extreme that makes really nice racks. They are not cheap & not pretty but they are solid. Check them out at

hope this helps,

Brian

BD,

I now agree that the Conn-Ferrs are not the best choice. I've been looking at www.wildernessracks.com now, and I think I like their mounting system much better.

Thanks for the link to D+C... excellent place to bookmark!

Yeah those look pretty good. The Yakima adaptors are a plus. I have a Yakima canoe carrier on the bars of my rack & it has come in handy.

Post a picture when you get it all set up.

Yeah I recognized the irony in encouraging you to post a picture when I haven't. My rack is currently on it's side under my deck awaiting warmer weather but when I do install it I will.

Another thought- Land Rover places tend to have excellent & high quality racks & gear but they are extremely expensive.

There are 2 things that are preventing me running out and getting a rack now:

1. Drilling holes in my roof.

2. Everyone but me says it will look absolutely ridiculous.

No. 2 is of little consequence. I want the rack to mount my spare tire and hi-lift jack, and a shovel/sledgehammer/pull-pal/etc and not have to take up space in my bed.

But I just bought 2 of those bed rails that mount in the stake pockets. You know, most people use them just for looks. I've fabbed up a couple adaptors so I can use U-bolts to mount my Hi-Lift jack rack to one of them, and am thinking of a way to mount the sledge, shovel, and pull-pal to the other.

Besides the hole drilling, the only problem I can see with the safari rack and spare tire being up there is fuel mileage. I'd hate to get it all installed and find myself losing 1 MPG.
