A new place just opened in town. They take plasma out of your blood and use it for people that need it. I was wondering if anyone here was donating and how they feel about it.

They told me that I could donate twice a week as long as I drink enough water (and of course pass the initial physical).

I'm thinking its for a good cause and plus they pay $20 per visit. (bombing money :p ) The only downside I see is they take the blood, seperate out the plasma, then pump the rest back into ya. I'm a little worried about having something from a machine pumped back into me. Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, you tell me. Tim

Being uneducated that would worry me also. :D I am on your path. I would tell them for $20 they could just keep it, I'll make more. :D

every now and then is ok, but do some research into what plasma is made up of. You will find you will be giving away a lot of you white blood cells. This is what fights off infections. I have a brother and have had friends who did the plasma thing for money, in college. They did it for a few months and all ended up getting sick, and run down easily. When they stopped, they returned back to normal, several weeks later. It's your body. You take the risk. Donating whole blood is a much better thing, but you usually dont get money for it.

Thanks for the replys. I can't speak for your friends in college, but when I was there, my diet consisted of cheap food and beer. The people at the donation center recommend a good healthy diet and tons of water consumption. That would have certainly taken it's toll on me in those years. I'm still debating and if I do start it'll be a slow pace at least to begin with.

The guys I ran with in College would do it for two reasons -

the extra cash helped and

the process helped them 'get their drink on' cheaper.

Good luck, I have major needle-phobia.

Plasma also kept my mom from dying during some of the proceedures that she had done. She needed a lot of units of both blood and plasma and it made a big difference. If you think you'll get run down, don't donate as often.

I donated several times four years ago (at age 63) with no negative effects at all. My wife roped me in with her to earn some extra money to help a teen lady friend who was making a missions trip. Biggest negatives were, tech had trouble hitting my veins (got paid xtra for each stick), and the TV was blaring on some awful old movie that was hoky. I'd do it again if I had a special reason.
