This is my 1st CTD and it rocks. Never going back. But I have developed the dreaded lack of power steering. No wonder see the suspension lift and the tires on this thing. Gonna do a NAPA Power Steering Pump and the double lipped seal from fixinrams.com for the vaccum pump. Am I missing anything? And does anyone know anything about this truck? I think it came from Michigan, I got it near Buffalo NY about a year ago.

Welcome to the TDR.

I don't know if that was a members truck or not. I don't remember seeing pic's of it in readers rigs.

Someone did a nice job on that front bumper.

You need a headache rack on that bed. LOL

Welcome to the group! That is a nice looking truck, the only other thing I know about it is it has funny looking fender badges on it!!! :D

What year is the truck and does it have the original vac pump set-up or has it been changed to a newer style? Better double check what vacuum pump is in the truck. There is an early style twin pod canister set-up, not sure if fixinrams has anything for the old pod style units. If not Cummins has a seal kit dirt cheap for them.

I'd say it has more to do with it being a plow truck then big tires.

It is a very sharp truck, the front bumper looks way better then most plow bumpers I've seen.

Thanks for all the compliments. The truck is a 1990. I am going to have to look to see if its the double cannister. I read about that in the searches I did. I am going to keep this truck as long as it takes it to "rust to dust. " Should I be doing a power steering upgrade? No one really says what that costs in the threads I've read. And I have yet to hit upon that thread that list the parts and steps for a 1st gen swap/upgrade. I am sure that I will have to get my seal from Cummins if I have the wrong style cannister I read that on this site somewhere the fixinrams guy for sure doesn't have that. No snow on the Tug so lucky me right now. I wish I could come plow some Snow in Co. Oo.

If it is a 90 (or non-intercooled, period) it has the dual canister set up. The vane style pumps came with intercooling.

Before I replaced anything, I'd check your vacuum output. Then move to the power steering. If your brakes are good, you have vacuum. Could also be the steering box if it got adjusted too tight. Rebuild of your old box is around $200 from PSC (shipping included), and I loved the one I had. (Wish I had taken it off the truck when I sold it). Much better feel, and it gets upgraded. As for the pump, I have only run stock pumps.

Daniel, tell us more about this upgraded box... I think 90% of 4x4 boxes are now due for one...

the only thing I know about that truck is that it was listed on ebay about a year or so ago ? looks great, just like mine cept 4x4

I forget all the details, but they put in harder (maybe bigger, too) internals, and have 2 or 3 options for 4x4/ offroading. It was almost 2 years ago, and I have slept since then. I know it was great on the truck the 8mo or so I had it. Also comes with a billet top and new different end cap, which we all know is just everything . I think it only came with a 1 year warranty, but with the parts store remans lasting half that long before developing slack, I went with them instead. There was even something in the box with Mom's that said some slack in the steering was normal :-laf

TIngersoll, are you close enough to see the windmills? ;) I get up that way sometimes, DANC, (Depressed Area of the North Country), or over to Lowville, sometimes Carthage with the service truck. Keep an eye on the Northeast section forum, us upstate guys are getting together more regular. If you need any help, send me a PM.

Might want to look into doing crossover steering as well. Sure beats the old push n pull setup these rigs came with from the factory. A company called Offroaddesign can sell you everything you need to do the conversion.

Update! we got lots of snow. Had to plow without power steering.

The rims say ion on the center cap. it is an italic slant style print on the center cap.

I can see quite a few windmills from the shop. JCT Truck Cap Business

I took a picture of the Vaccum pump. I think this would be the pod canister type right? Any one know what the blocked off vaccum line is supposed to go to. It is the line that looks like it is coming out of the power steering cap and has a rusty tension clamp half way up the hose and the rusty threads of the bolt can be seen that is blocking it off. The vaccum line is the tee and the other direction runs up to the brake booster.

I appreciate all the ideas for steering upgrades, pump options, etc.

it's funny I've had the truck a year and done nothing but put Amsoil 5w-30 series 3000 in it twice and changed the air filter fitted it with some air horns but I don't like them and a set of off road lites that serve as my back up lites. And now it seems to be breaking as I tinker with it. That's how it goes I guess.

I've got some other issues like a rattling exhaust should I go to stacks on this what do you think? One of my techs says to cross over to the opposite side and run 4" out the back he claims the soot gets all over the back of the trucks with the stacks. But man they look cool.

I always liked the horns on trains too. what do you think?

Those wheels are Ion alloys style 138. I thought they looked familiar, saw them in a 4x4 mag and looked 'em up. Look like any old rim on their website, but they do look pretty sweet on that truck!

Crossover is the only way to fly you can turn on a dime and give yourself nine cents change sure made a difference on my crewcab.

Steering

Well it's only been since I last posted and the Power Steering has failed again. We got through the snow plowing barely and then one morning no Power Steering again. We upgraded to the IC style Vaccum Pump and we can now split the power steering pump from the vaccum pump without taking them both off the truck. The new power steering pump went on this week and we have power steering again. This time we also lifted the front end and tires off the lift with the trolley jack and turned the wheels lock to lock several times just to make sure that if there was any air in there we were going to get it out. That's when we noticed the steering gear box was making noises. It sounded like one of the rims had impacted one of the jack stands turning the wheels lock to lock. Inspection showed practically no rubber boot on the shaft and it looked like snow and ice lived inside there this winter. After looking at all my options the OFF ROAD DESIGN Crossover system wil be going on this truck in the near future. Keep you posted. In 16 months of owning this truck the only issue with it has been this steering problem, and now we know how to fix it right, so we can keep it lifted with those big tires. :D
