Destroked is the only kit out there that does not require grinding your transmission tunnel. The nose on the Cummins starter is big. Destroked's kit uses a 6. 0 starter which is smaller so the grinding is not required. I have flexplate that will fit a 7. 3 starter if anyone needs one.
Most non-Chrysler transmissions require the starter to be relocated to the passenger's side. This almost always means that some metal from the bottom corner of the block will have to be relieved. Depending on the kit, you may or may not be able to get a bolt in that lowest hole for the transmission adapter plate. The engine block and transmission tunnel are the two typical places that require machining when using a Ford transmission behind a Cummins, at least with a flexplate that uses a Cummins starter.
I used about a 2 foot 1. 75" I. D. Gates hose for the upper radiator. Used a 27" length of 2. 25" I. D. for the lower into a piece of pipe that reduces it down to 1. 75" and a few inches of that size hose into the lower radiator. The Gates hoses are flexible and heavy duty. Better be because the lower is squeezed against the frame to make that 90 degree bend.
Does anyone have a part number for a lower Cummins water neck with an O. D. of 1. 75"? If so, i'd rather run one long piece of hose. Wanted to use that non-ribbed marine coolant hose but couldn't find it locally at all.
Just like FordCummins said. Hard part was that nobody had any big hose in stock. Had to order it and they all gave me funny looks. Anyway, the radiator is all hooked up, just haven't tried it yet. Next things will be rigging the throttle and a choke cable in stead of the electric fuel shutoff solenoid. I'm wanting it to run with the cable in, kill with the cable out.
Also been working out the passenger's side boost tube. Started by welding two bends but there isn't roof for that. Trying a straight pipe with the Ford dips around the ends so they will seal with the boost tubes.
Last thing we finished Saturday was the 5" exhaust. 4" Cummins downpipe into a Ford 5" exhaust with the $25 muffler. I plan to use a US Gear exhaust brake when i can afford one, that's why the 4" down pipe. It is an extremely tight fit. Took tons of cutting, measuring, fitting, adjusting. Should have gone with a 4" but this 5" may be really cool. Barely hits the rear shock or fuel tank when i bounce on the back bumper. We used a torch and made huge flat spots in the pipe around some obstacles. Kind of defeats the 5" pipe. The engine should be running by the end of next week.
-P. S. I just heard a rumor that there is a Ford dealership that will sell you a brand new truck under warranty with a 24 valve. Heard it might be in Kentucky. I sure like the suspension, turning radius, brakes, and dash on the 2005 up Super Duty trucks. I've got a 2006 dash so my Excursion will someday have it all.
