Dweys cummins conversions (chevys)

The radiator should have been one of the simplest things to hook up. ... . The easiest thing to do is get a sketch of what you need,

I did a complicated hookup with a radiator once by using the sketch, have exhasut pipe bent to take care of the complicated bends, leaving only two fairly long places flexible hookup to radiator and engine.

These big engines don,t move around much so the flex ends don't have to be too long, prob less than 2".

Be sure to upset the ends slightly so the clamps hasve something to hold on with.

Destroked is the only kit out there that does not require grinding your transmission tunnel. The nose on the Cummins starter is big. Destroked's kit uses a 6. 0 starter which is smaller so the grinding is not required. I have flexplate that will fit a 7. 3 starter if anyone needs one.

Most non-Chrysler transmissions require the starter to be relocated to the passenger's side. This almost always means that some metal from the bottom corner of the block will have to be relieved. Depending on the kit, you may or may not be able to get a bolt in that lowest hole for the transmission adapter plate. The engine block and transmission tunnel are the two typical places that require machining when using a Ford transmission behind a Cummins, at least with a flexplate that uses a Cummins starter.

I used about a 2 foot 1. 75" I. D. Gates hose for the upper radiator. Used a 27" length of 2. 25" I. D. for the lower into a piece of pipe that reduces it down to 1. 75" and a few inches of that size hose into the lower radiator. The Gates hoses are flexible and heavy duty. Better be because the lower is squeezed against the frame to make that 90 degree bend.

Does anyone have a part number for a lower Cummins water neck with an O. D. of 1. 75"? If so, i'd rather run one long piece of hose. Wanted to use that non-ribbed marine coolant hose but couldn't find it locally at all.

Just like FordCummins said. Hard part was that nobody had any big hose in stock. Had to order it and they all gave me funny looks. Anyway, the radiator is all hooked up, just haven't tried it yet. Next things will be rigging the throttle and a choke cable in stead of the electric fuel shutoff solenoid. I'm wanting it to run with the cable in, kill with the cable out.

Also been working out the passenger's side boost tube. Started by welding two bends but there isn't roof for that. Trying a straight pipe with the Ford dips around the ends so they will seal with the boost tubes.

Last thing we finished Saturday was the 5" exhaust. 4" Cummins downpipe into a Ford 5" exhaust with the $25 muffler. I plan to use a US Gear exhaust brake when i can afford one, that's why the 4" down pipe. It is an extremely tight fit. Took tons of cutting, measuring, fitting, adjusting. Should have gone with a 4" but this 5" may be really cool. Barely hits the rear shock or fuel tank when i bounce on the back bumper. We used a torch and made huge flat spots in the pipe around some obstacles. Kind of defeats the 5" pipe. The engine should be running by the end of next week.

-P. S. I just heard a rumor that there is a Ford dealership that will sell you a brand new truck under warranty with a 24 valve. Heard it might be in Kentucky. I sure like the suspension, turning radius, brakes, and dash on the 2005 up Super Duty trucks. I've got a 2006 dash so my Excursion will someday have it all.

I called fordcummins a while back to buy some wiring information for swapping a common rail into my truck. He said he would be happy to sell it to me. Then he asked me if I already had a motor. I had already found a new motor for $1500 less than he was selling his used ones. Every time I asked him how much for the wiring info he changed the subject. Then he started pushing me to buy a motor that had been water damaged and fixed by him. It started to smell fishy so I bailed. I'll find another source for the wiring info.

I can't believe you die-hard Ford people who want a Cummins in your truck. Why don't you just buy a Dodge, It's a better truck anyway and you won't have to go to so much trouble and expense. You never hear of Dodge owners wanting to convert to PowerStroke or Duramax. If you must have a Ferd, get a gasser.

There are many dodge owners that will tell you the only reason they bought the dodge was for the motor. I have a first gen dodge, but have been looking into a common rail conversion for a while. The 3rd gen Dodge truck looks like a ladies truck to me. :-laf

The present Ford design, which came out in 1999, is copied after the 2nd gen Dodge. Dodge is not always in the shop like a Ford. I've had two Dodge's for 12 years now and neither one have have been in the shop. Prior to that I had an F250 and either I worked on it all the time or it was in the shop. When I gave it away, it was on it's third gasser engine. I didn't have the conscience to sell it, so I gave it away and I'll never have another one. I like the looks of a Dodge, but looks are just a matter of personal preference.

well lets see. two first gen's ,one second gen,and now a 3rd gen,all have given me what i consider to be more trouble than any of my ford or gm trucks. most all the gm and fords have been diesel's as well, with the exception of one gm,all my diesel pickups have been trouble free. my theroy,if you prefer one brand of truck over the other,go with it. if you have a favorite engine ,and want it in your favorite truck,do it. so long as it's not overly feasable. i have seen ford diesels in gm trucks, and at least two gm diesels in dodge products, and more than a couple 12v cummins engines in both ford and gm trucks. they all had one thing in common, none of them were electronic engines.

Oh please lets not start the Dodge Ford thing. Cummins is NOT a Dodge engine so get over it. Ford trucks use the same cummins engines and I have friends that have Cummins out of Backhoes in their trucks.

This is true, but the point I'm trying to make is why go through so much fuss on converting when you can get the best of both worlds already put together for you. Dodge and Cummins.

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth here.

My 96 chevy dually 4x4 is a nice truck thats 100% paid for.

If you give me a comparable truck to mine in trade for $4000( cost of conversion) and my current truck with a dead motor you're on. Ill pm you my address so you can pick up mine and drop off my new dodge.
