I tried posting in the 1st gen posting but didn't get any response. Noticed most of the trans upgrades seem to be happening in the 2nd gen so thought I'd ask the question here.

As you can see from my signature, I own a 1st gen. But I've upgraded to a larger 5er and want to solidify my drivetrain. The stock transmission (non-locking, of course) works well but the trans temps tend to climb on hill climbs. I'd like to reduce the temps and get more power to the ground. A local shop installs BD transmissions but I want to know if that's the way I should go. The price is about $1K more than a local heavy duty rebuild. I'd be willing to pay the extra dough if it's worth it.

I also see a lot of DTT mentioned here. So that might be an option also.

Just let me know your opinions. I value them greatly!

Wade

WBissell,

Wade, I used Dave Goerend for all my trans work dating back to my 1st. gen.

I can tell you that you NEED a triple disc converter for ANY UPGRADE to your trans. :D

You should also go with the reinforced flywheel to be safe. :)

Any of the big trans guys on the coast will work, just get prices before you commit to the work.

I hope this helps,

Waynesworld: I don't have a lock up TC so I don't believe a triple disk setup will work for me. Will it?

I heard that Goerends takes a while to get done only because they're so busy. I'm looking to do something within the next 2 months. I'll look into them, though. Thank you.

I just installed parts from a bunch of suppliers, an ATS 5 star torque converter (so far works good), a DKK input billet shaft (I think it is actually made by TCS in Canada), and a heavy duty shift kit whose manufacturer I don't know, sorry.

I haven't really tested it yet but for what its worth the transmission shop was very impresssed with the parts and the result. A guy can put more parts into it than I did but I don't intend to juice up the engine to anymore than about 350 hp so I don't really need to go with anymore.

If you don't have a lockup clutch, then you won't be able to use a triple disc t/c. Could do a 47RH conversion. Will just need to add 2 switches to operate the lockup and O/D.

Dave is busy, but he could probably have one built within your timeframe. He's worth the wait. Was 2 weeks for me, several years ago. The did the R&R as well.

I got an ATS w/ 5 disc, Trans commander coupled w Pac brake @ Chucks Speed Center in Phoenix and it took one day in, next day out. Anyway i love it! RikaRio

I have installed several of Dave Goerend's transmission and I can reinforce the fact that it is worth the wait. Give Dave a call, he will have an extra hand in the shop next week!:) It might help him catch up. Tell him I sent you. Jeremy.

Well I'm getting a lot of Goerend Transmission recommendations. How do you pronounce that anyway?? I've been saying 'Gore-and'. Is that correct?

I've emailed them so I'll see what they say. Thanks to you all for your responses.

WBissel,

I had my most recent upgrade done in two days. Oo.

So time isn't an issue. But as far as the triple , you do need it----

Talk to Dave about your concerns.

He'll only give you what you need.

But I WOULD DEFINITELY GET ONE ALONG WITH THE FLYWHEEL UPGRADE !

IMHO,

i had many many many bd problems and my new suncoast works great went through many repairs and 2 trannies but the first suncost works great best of luck. goerends is a great company but i couldn't wait on him i have been down 3 months because of bd.

One question, are you planning on converting to a lock-up torque converter? That's a lot of money.

If not, have the trans done by someone that knows 727's (or 518) if it needs it. Go with a 98% converter or if you have some power, go with a 91%.

Then, cram as big a cooler as you can in there. One of those under bed ones work great.

The converter is where all your heat comes from so a better one is in order.

don't forget to run 2 to 3 quarts of 30w engine oil to help lube it.

If it is adjusted properly, it will never die. Check the first gen section (search) for transmission adjustments. simple do do yourself.
