Matt,

I would recommend the DPP system. You have more options regarding cost( aluminized, T409, T304, etc. ) with the same muffler technology. It fits great. They are great people to deal with as well. Secondly..... with your 3. 73 gears, you will avoid the drone even more because the drone is more obvious in the 2000-2200 rpm range. Third..... you will notice the truck spools up quicker and runs out better with a complete 4" systerm.

let me know if you have any more questions.

This wouldn't help if you want a larger diameter exhaust, but I gutted my original muffler. It is as quiet as stock and has no drone at any speed or load. Price was right too! Just an afternoon with a hacksaw, torch, and welder!

Interesting Steve, what all did you pull out? I mean did you just cut out the baffles or cut everything out so its just an empty chamber?

The new 600's are suppose to have a true 4" system so maybe one of those mufflers has a 4" in and out that could be modified.

Hard to believe its just as quiet with all the guts removed.

I used to own a mufler shop and have really studdied how mufflers work and how they kill the noise. Removing the pass tubes will increase the noise slightly, but you can convert the end champers to "silencing champers" and reduct the noise. It is all a matter of understanding how mufflers work.

Also note, I have a '01. 5. My muffler might be a little different than the newer trucks, but the principles will be the same.

I will offer a rather lengthy letter to walk you through the process to anyone who is interested. Just PM me.

No more drone...

I switched back to a 4" system and went with a Donaldson M090544, its also 51" like the Silent Partner I had but 9" OD vs 10" OD and 4" inlet/outlet vs the M101181 that was 5" inlet/outlet.

Its more loud than stock but not much, is way more quite than the "Silent Partner" and best of all the drone is gone.

For just a tad more authority in sound while improving flow I think this does the trick.

Some have said the M090544 is just as quite as stock but I think those changed only the muffler where I went to a full 4" and got rid of the cast turbo elbow.

I was using the full Banks exhaust on my truck. It was OK running empty. When I pulled the 13k camper for 4500 miles in July it was way too loud. I put the Donaldson M090544 in place of the Banks muffler. It is much quieter. The noise level is close to stock and I still have low back pressure.

Thats good to know... I had the opportunity to go with a full banks system but didn't. I haven't towed yet with the M090544.

Fireman previously summed up my exhaust situation and I am very happy with it. It sounds stock inside and good on the outside. 4 inch Hogg Exhaust with an 18inch Augmentor muffler up front right at the down pipe, and their standard 24inch muffler in the stock location turned with more louvers facing the engine (the quietest configuration). I have the 5. 5inch chrome tip on the end and it looks and sounds tuff outside, but quiet inside. I had the 1700 RPM drone prior to putting the augmentor up front by the down pipe... hats off to Fireman for that trick and suggestion. I have been very happy with my exhaust, and agree that you need to make it tight and attached firmly... that is the good thing about the Hogg, you get the big band clamps.

I also agree that a lot of your noise comes from your air intake. Part of the reason the manufacturer uses the big air boxes for air cleaners is to keep the noise down to get past the EPA. Open it up and you get a big sucking roar as the mighty diesel inhales. Sounds like... power.
