I am looking at a NEW 5. 9 powered 2007 that is in TEXAS. I live in California. Are the 5. 9's legal in all 50 states? Is there something in the VIN number that will tell me if this is so??

Thanks for any help, Chris

I've been told that all california models are legal in the 50 states but not all models sold in other states are legal in california. Stricter emissions laws in california.

Ca registration.

Unless the vehicle has 7500 miles on it,it has to be Ca certified. There will be a sticker on the engine and a certificate of origin that states it's legal to be registered in this state. If it doesn't meet either of these criterias you're out of luck. Try Les McDaniel@ Dave Smith Motors 1-800-635-8000X1302. Good guy. P. S. Here in San Diego,Hine Dodge is advertising leftover 2007 CTD's for $10,000 off MSRP. 1-866-296-1503. It might be worth the call. Last year with no DPF's.

Thanks... I just checked the dealer you mentioned and no go. I called Dave Smith Dodge in Idaho and asked how they were selling trucks to Calif buyers. The sales guy told me that they ordered Calif emission trucks. I thought they had some way to convert a federal truck to Calif specs.

I found one close to where I live but It is Inferno red. It is a nice color but not my first choice. I have looked at it several times to make sure I want that color.

It gorws on you... ... . I caught the red in my peripheral vision, and decided to test it. I figured not to many people would drive this color truck. Was I wrong. Must be the color scheme for all the manufacturers this year. If you get it, have them deduct the color fee.

I don't recall seeing a CA emis. note on my data tag, but then I did not look that close.

I've seen on the Window sheet, California Emmissions something. It's definitely a option. Also I believe the 7500 odo rule is correct if you're not California optioned. I wouldn't have picked Molten Red for my '06 but it was only rig on the lot with most of options I wanted. (non-California compliant) The color grows on you real fast even if you're Geezer quaified.

I thought the same re 50 state legal, but when factory ordering my '07 there was a option check box for California Emission compliant which I made sure stayed unchecked. Seems like a $150-$250 option price or so. When shopping my '06 from dealer inventories, Washington, Oregon, Nevada were considered "border states" and lots of dealer quota rigs were California Emissions optioned and some weren't. My '06 isn't.

Basically it boils down to the CARB sticker. Federal emissions requirements mandate testing 1 out of 10 (or is it 100?) new vehicles whereas California requires all of them (or at least a much higher percentage of all new vehicles). California spec and Federal emissions vehicles are identical other than the testing process and sticker.

Thanks for the info Vaughn. You'd think out of half a dozen dealerships at least one of them could have said what the California Emissions option and price charge was for... , Now I know.

Vaughn MacKenzie is correct. Fed trucks are tested 1 of every 100 (could be 1 in 10) while CA certified truck are all tested. They are all the same except for the sticker on the engine. Check out this site from DMV Before Buying a Vehicle From Out of State—Be Sure You Can Register It in California (FFVR 29) Make sure it has the sticker otherwise you can not register it in CA.

They almost never have to test one for Federal, if they are identical to Cali vehicles. Basically, if they sell a certain percentage in Cali, they tell the Feds that they have tested whatever percentage, and that is good enough. So they get a free ride, and get to charge more for Cali vehicles. That's why they prefer a 50 state vehicle. Otherwise, they'd have to test for both Feds, and Cali.

Cost comparisons.

When I special ordered my Ca spec'd truck I naturally checked the Ca box. For comparison I spec'd out a federal vehicle... . identical price. I think Dodge just spreads out the testing cost to everyone. I was on the phone to Dave Smith Motors and my salesguy stated that 40% of the vehicles they order have Ca specs. from '07 down as they do so much Ca biz. He said that ALL '07. 5's are Ca compliant.

Thanks for the info guys. I am on my way today to buy a Calif model with the LATE G56 ratio trans. Thanks to this board again and all the guys on it I am buying the right truck.

I learned about the rear disc brakes coming out on the '01. 5s and bought my first truck that way. Learned about the later, 6th gear ratioed G56 here too. Thanks... Chris
