are lumpy sidewalls common to truck tires?

The Goodyear tires on my 01 Ram all have ripples in the sidewalls, some deeper than others. My 98 which also had goodyears showed the same thing. While waiting for a ride at the dealer the other day I noticed that the new trucks on the lot with Michelins did not seem to have these bumpy sidewalls. Is this something that is more common to higher ply tires or should I have it checked out?

The Goodyears on my girfriends Mustang are that way as well as the BF Goodrich on my sisters Tahoe and her boyfriends Jeep. My 14 ply Michelins aren't that way.

I was told by a tire guru that sidewall grooves are normal with steel belted radials. Has something to do with the steel belts. Gets worse as the sidewall size increases.

My factory badyears have the ripples in all 6 tires. I would like to get rid of these in favor of a 255/85 tire. I saw a set on a F-350 last week and they had plenty of room between the duals. I think our 2000 up truck would be fine also.

I sold and installed tires for a few years as long as the deformation is an indention,it's ok. It's caused by the overlapping of the sidewall reinforcing material-- less flex when doubled up.

If the deformation protrudes or bulges outward, stop by your tire dealer and get it checked out ASAP this is usually a separation in the making,not a good thing.

Mike hit it right on the head. As long as they are indentaions and not external or outward bulges the tires are fine. I work in a tire shop,it seems that not only the different brands vary in overlap but the same brandname but different tire type also.
