Would anyone know if the 2500 and 3500's have the same springs? How about if they were diesel vs V10?

I'm trying to source a set of used 4x4 front coils but all the junkies have no diesel parts around here.

I noticed a co-workers "new" Ram (a used '01. 5 2500 QC SWB 4x4 24v CTD) the other day that seemed to be sitting a little low in the front... like a 1500. Hmmm... my curiousity got the better of me so I checked out his front coils. Huh? An 038 passenger and an 039 driver spring? That was too weird!

After wondering what the ding, dang deal was...

I talked to my buddy with a '99 2500 QC 4x4 LWB (V-10). After relaying the above information to him we went and checked out just what he had sitting under his front end... 038 passenger/039 driver. The morons at the factory screwed up (IMO) on the springs they put under the first truck I detailed above... never before have I heard of this light spring combination with a CTD up front!

On my own '98. 5 2500 QC 4x4 LWB Ram, the factory wouldn't let me order the Snow Plow Prep Group with the QC AND the Diesel engine... AND THE 046/047 springs! ( ) Sooo, I got the 039 passenger/046 driver springs.

Fast forward to present. I purchased 047/048 springs that I'm using at the passenger/driver positions, respectively.

Heh,heh, heh, finally, like Burger King I'll have it MY way!

... powder coated gloss black to boot! :D

John,

How do the 47/48 springs ride in comparison to the 39/46 combo. How much did the switch raise the front of the truck?

I have the 39/46 combo and was thinking about going to 46/47.

John that appears to be the right combo for a SWB QC auto w/o the plow prep. It does seem under sprung as they always sag. For that matter the fact that my truck came with the 039/046 set up is a joke. It was fighting to keep the nose up on the assembly line:rolleyes: If i had a vote I would say that ever ram produced should have been up rated one step in springs. My 98 gasser QC LWB Auto with the snow plow prep came with 039/046 spring which were perfect in normal driving. i never had a plow on it but would probably have uprated the springs to do so.

All these auto designers need to remember they are making TRUCKS not try to make them feel like a cadallac.

Tom

My truck has the same setup as Tom's. I think they made the left a little stiffer to account for driver weight and other added weight on the left side...

There is a listing of all the coil springs on the Dodge Ram tech site (Fritz's)... .

I don't think 38/39 is the correct setup for any 4x4 Cummins. The lightest I have seen any is 39/46. Just my observation.

Cooker, although I have installed the new 047/048 springs, I am currently performing MANY upgrades all at the same time on my Ram so, I haven't test driven the combination yet.

The new springs raised the front end as follows:

(047) passenger: 1"

(048) driver: 3/8"

NOTE: I had 3/4" of spring sag on the driver side (ONLY) before I replaced both OE coil springs. There was NO spring sag in the passenger side coil spring or either rear leaf spring.

So, it would appear the net raise of the front end is as follows:

passenger: 1/4"

driver: 3/8"

ADDITIONAL NOTE: The before measurement was with the "old" Edelbrock IAS shocks installed (81. 5k on my Ram... 78. 5k on the IAS shocks)... the after measurement (047/048 springs) was made without the new Bilstein shocks installed.

John,

I was also wondering how your truck rode with the 047/048 springs. I have 038/039 from factory and will upgrade. I may install a plow, so I was considering the same combo you have if it doesn't ride too stiff. Thanks

Embarrassingly enough, I haven't completed all the upgrades to my Ram yet therefore I haven't driven it. Heck, I haven't even moved it for at least two months now... it's half in, half out of my garage.

That's understandable. I am getting ready to pull the trans out and add a new torque converter and valve body, so mine may be down for a while too. I will check back in a few weeks. Thanks

Starting from when?

:-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf

(I guess it's safe to say I've been taking my time with all my latest upgrades)

I didn't replace my springs, but did put a set of 2. 5" coil spacers on the front of my 2wd 2500. Which gave me about a 3. 5-4" lift.

I had to get aftermarket upper control arms and shocks but total cost for all was only 4 bills (also ordered rear lift blocks) and was easy to install myself.

All in all I'd say I have a 3. 5" all around lift and my height is dead on with that of the 4x4's I park next to.

Then I added all the perf goodies and I LOVE my truck. Ride is a lil bumpy, but no more than before since I still have the stock springs (which I think are sagging some since they do have 175k miles on them).

I am feeling really good about myself now John, - my converter is half way installed! (we finally had some good weekend weather):D

Well...

I know it's quite a bit later than you would have thought for my response, but after all, I did say, "Two weeks from when?" :D

Anyway, I f-i-n-a-l-l-y got my Ram back on the road after an extended down period for upgrades etc. I drove it on several medium length test drives (to test and tweak things) prior to setting off for Diesel Thunder III last Friday which is all the way across the state in Spokane, WA. Most everything perfromed very well however, as there are a few things to address, I haven't driven my Ram since. [all in due time]

As far as my new Mopar replacement springs and Bilstein shocks go, they performed very, very well, and I'm extremely happy with my choices. Although you might think the #047 passenger/#048 driver replacement springs might be a little harsh, I can attest that they were superior to the #039/#046 as equipped from Dodge. No more bouncing or jouncing while crossing raised railroad tracks or speed bumps. Anyway, suffice it to say, I'm very glad I made the switch to the front spring/shock combination I did and would do the very same thing if given the choice again.

John,

All right, I had already started a thread because I got one side 'hanging low' and now I see this thread is cooking along pretty good.

I already have an 047/046 combo up front, but the driver's side is 3/4" lower. Would swapping the 047 for an 048 fix me up or are the springs essentially the same length? Thiis would result in an 048/046 --- the right side is already high enough!

Thanks,

Matt

John,

Thanks for the follow up. I hope all is well with the truck.

A couple questions about the springs. Has your ride height increased? You mentioned the ride is not as bouncy, so does that mean it is harder? Does it toss the cups out of the cup holder even easier now?

Thanks,

Ryan
