Arizona vehicle registrations are already some of the highest in the country, now this. I may have to change my residency to South Dakota. I imagine this includes RV's but do not know for sure.

Public Safety Fee going into effect
Fee to be collected during vehicle-registration process

Beginning Dec. 1, Arizona motorists expecting vehicle registration renewals will see a new Public Safety Fee. The fee was established by state law to support public safety and Highway Patrol operations. The fee goes into effect for registrations due in January which can be paid as early as Dec. 1, and immediately for newly registered vehicles.

The fee will be collected during the vehicle-registration process administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. Arizona statute established the method for collecting the fee and sets the process for determining the amount based on a formula designed to support Highway Patrol operations.

Highway Patrol operations — among the most visible functions of the Arizona Department of Public Safety — include response to collisions on Arizona highways, enforcing state laws designed to keep the motoring public safe, arresting impaired drivers, assisting motorists in distress, air-rescue operations and patrolling more than 6,800 miles of highways.

Most motorists will pay $32 per vehicle, per year. Street-legal golf carts and primarily off-highway vehicles will pay $5. Those who register a vehicle annually or pay for a two- or five-year registration will pay the entire amount up front for each registered year.

The funds raised through the Public Safety Fee will not only provide necessary dollars for public safety, but will advance maintenance and construction of Arizona’s highway infrastructure, including the state’s Key Commerce Corridors that support economic development around the state.

Over the past decade, much of the Highway Patrol’s budget was considered part of the Arizona Highway User Revenue Fund, the gas-tax account that supports Arizona roadways, including law-enforcement support. The new $32 Public Safety Fee will allow gas-tax money to support roadway maintenance and construction, while providing a different source of funding for Highway Patrol operations.

I just received the same email. I guess our taxes just went up again. One of my vehicles only cost $17 to register last year, now it's $50? When did we get the opportunity to vote on this garbage? $32 dollars for every vehicle in AZ is a ton of money for the state.

As much as I don't like the tax increase, if they make I-17 three lanes north of New River to Cordes it might be worth it. Or maybe I just need to move to MT like I've been wanting to do for years...

$112 last year, plus emissions testing fees. I'm sure NY is more expensive. I think what David (don't want to put words in his mouth) and I are upset about is that we didn't have a choice in the matter, this just got slapped on us out of the blue.

This is going to cost me $133 more per year in my household. The revenue haul on this for the state is huge and I doubt we'll see much benefit out of it, if any. They call it a "fee", it's a tax for having a license plate.

Sorry, I'm a little bent out of shape on this one. It's not so much the money but the principle and what little the AZ taxpayer is going to gain from it.

We changed our residency to Flag when we retired, no more emission test. My 99 if I remember right was something like 250 for 5 years now it will be 410. The 5th wheel was 300 for 5 years now 460. The wife's van 160 for 2 years now 320. We are on a fixed income so there is no working a few hours to recoup the loss. If you have a new Ram yearly is above 600 not counting the extra 32. I emailed both our Representatives voicing my displeasure with the added expense especially for seniors on fixed incomes that are living Month to Month. It's not like we can have Social Security help pay this added expense.

Dave

When the 99 was brand new valued at 32k it was 450 a year plus 20 a year for emissions. No more than 1 year registration in Maricopa County for Diesels.

Dave

It costs me more to go through emmisions than the $20 registration for my 1993. I guess the vote saying no taxes on services was ignored by lawmakers eager to spend our money.

Yea it’s tough to do a direct comparison, because some states assess, and others, like NY you pay a one time sales tax like buying a toaster, which is 8.875% the Reggie for my Ram is $219 for 2 years forever. Been like that for a while. It used to be so much cheaper- like $35.
I guess they all suck.

Our sales tax is really close to yours, but the annual registration tax does go down every year and not a fixed amount. Registering a new vehicle can be very expensive but the pain eases year over year.

But you're right, they all suck.

Kudos to you for taking the time to send them emails, this isn't right.

I told my wife when we moved here if it doesn't turn into Kommiefornia until our son got out of high school, we'd re-evaluate. He's a sophomore at NAU, so I wasn't too far off. Not many places to go that don't have hard Winter, earthquakes, twisters, or hurricanes. It's still an amazing state, especially for off-roaders. I just hate to see the commies taking over.

Yeah, it's a far cry from 1977 when we moved here. I imagine it will only get worse.

I agree, I was born in this state and will always love it. The amount of public lands/national forests we have available to explore is amazing, but even that is slowly eroding. Lots of road closures and the sell off of state trust lands also gets me furious. I grew up in Flagstaff and many of the places I used to go now have "road closed" signs in front of them for no apparent reason. I hope your son is enjoying his time in Flag, I miss it. Just be careful that the Kyrsten Sinema types don't rub off on him, there's plenty up there.

Well this thread just went political, sorry.

Post #1 is political... Short memories of a "recall" in Commiefornia over a sudden increase in license plate fees. (Last straw over electric bills going through the roof after the open market power scam and related power blackouts.) Governor Schwarzenegger refunded the fees collected after reversing license plate fees.

They closed a lot of AZ campgrounds this past year due to fires and even some of the campgrounds burned.

He likes NAU. We did our level-best to instill good values, and the importance of right and wrong. I don't think he'll be swayed. He doesn't have near the street smarts I had at that age, but he is smarter than me, so I trust he will find his way.

Sorry friends, your registration fees are miniscule compared to my state.....drops annually for the first five years when vehicle is new,,,,then stays at the fifth year cost for as long as you own it. Going out to the file cabinet, will report back....

2008 GMC Yukon 150,000 miles on it.......238.62 per year..

2004 Cougar in 2006 was $450.00 or so, 2007 was $303.60....bottomed out at the five year mark to $134.64

2006 Dodge Ram....my favorite example.....First year was ....wait for it.......$1112.96....now down to $229.66. Never will get any lower....
