DPS pensions seem ripe for abuse. I know court cases where officers are to testify are scheduled as OT for officers, they purposely work all hours possible in their last years to bump the pension up to ridiculous levels. We have a local cop who gamed the system by "medically retiring" for a shoulder injury(before rules changed),

I agree and it is not just DPS, City and County are guilty too. If they are buddies with the Chief or Sheriff they get promotions to do the same thing. Why would you promote an old fart--has been, that wont do anything for the department. They just rake in the dollars and do nothing.

I couldn't stand it any longer after 14 years and quit. It cost me half of my pension but I did it anyway. The stories I could tell. Don't get me started, Lol.

If you were to pull an officer off of his shift to go to court his route would have to be covered - by someone on overtime. As someone who has had to make and cover schedules, it is much easier (from a scheduling view) to not disrupt the shift, and it is more efficient. If they even have the choice.... I'm pretty sure the judge doesnt have everyone's schedule on his desk when he sets the court dates, LOL.

What about when they are all having a convention at the coffee and donut dispensary? Who is covering then? Don't shoot the messenger here, but public perception plays a key role. With todays technology, they hold hearings from jailhouses via teleconference, etc.. Point is, our DPS system needs an update. Lots of waste in the system. Reserves could be tapped as well. Part-time utility, maybe? Officers could link in via their squad cars even. But, imagine the uproar with public employees unions. There is a distinct difference if talking sheriff's dept. and city cops. Sheriffs do a boatload more, with a heck of a lot less. I hated being a scheduler, somebody always pissed at you.....oh well.

People got to eat. And they are still "on call" while chomping a doughnut. Look at it this way: The stupid criminal that robs a doughnut shop is interrupting the officer's break. Further the Officer is going to have to clean the sticky mess off their gun that will further put them in a bad mood.

Most people get to "clock out" for lunch and leave the job site or otherwise open their lunchbox and take a 30 min to 1 hour break. Police Officers may have to leave their food with or without taking a single bite when the SHTF and they are called to respond now. Heart attack, auto wreck, natural disaster, or stupid criminal held at gunpoint till they finish their doughnut. HA-HA, no: the criminal would be cuffed and stuffed and then evaluated to see if they need medical attention from an overdose, etc. Even after putting two rounds in them the Officer's still call for medical attention to save the neutralized threat's life.

Not saying all police departments have their officers on call during breaks, but, some do.

I know they are on call, most of the public-maybe not. I have had relatives in law enforcement( Sheriff and police) as well as on the FD/EMT squads currently. Public perception on 90% of a patrol , in the same place, at the same time...….doesn't generally sit well with the public, warranted or not. Public has a love-hate relationship with anybody official, nowadays anyway. Let's face it, world is nuts......I don't claim to have all the answers, just ideas- crazy as they may sound...….but certainly no crazier than the current crop of Demons' proposals. I yield the floor...…..

We're 200 officers short in San Diego. They can't afford to live here.

Our Sheriff department has been short staffed for some years now. It got so bad at one point there was one Deputy on duty for the entire county. Our county is sparsely populated but the largest in the state in terms of square miles. When this happened (due to the budget) the Sheriff plastered a message across every media outlet he could get access to, including the front page of the newspaper. He specifically said, "we can no longer effectively serve you. Arm yourselves, and defend yourself and your neighbors. We will be there to clean up."

I'm just thankful to live in an area where the act of defending yourself - rather than putting your families safety in the hands of others - is still promoted.

How much weight are you declaring?
We don't declare anything. It's all based on the cost of the vehicle when new. A sports car that costs the same amount will pay the same as the truck when they renew their tags.

AZ law makers figure if you can afford an expensive vehicle, you must have deep pockets - perfect targets for picking!

I live in AZ, so I know how it works. Sorry, I assumed it was a 3500, they force you to get a commercial plate, and declare weight even for personal use.

On Edit: I had asked about 3500 and 4500 at MVD, so I may have my wires crossed. It's tough when you have CRS:D

my '17 Ram - renewed in 2018 - $748 (AZ)
Pardon my ignorance...… Was this for one year or ??? I was under the impression AZ was more reasonable than Calif.??
My 2012 2500 CTD in California is running over $650 a year presently and has been astronomical since new in Calif...…. So has AZ caught up with Calif?
I had a 2000 7.3 PSD and it was still running $300 in 2012. California is MAXIMUM SUCK when it comes to registration fees!

There are three possible components to AZ registration. The actual registration, which is reasonable, the fee based on weight, which may/may not apply, and is still fairly reasonable, THEN the commie VLT fee, which is based on the value and age of the vehicle, and is outrageous. It's the "because we can" fee.
