Ram 2500 MPG

GENERAL QUESTION said:
I am looking into buying a Ram 2500 what will I expect for MPG on the Hemi and what will the Cummins get. I test drove a 1500 hemi other day was good. But I think the 2500 would be better. I hope you can get some real numbers on MPG for 2500 Hemi and Cummins.

Fuel economy depends more on driver habits and behavior than any other factor. The EPA ratings attempt to compare vehicles using a certain driving style and are therefore useful data even if the ratings are not identical to the customers experience. The 2500 will not achieve as high economy as a 1500 when driven in the same manner due to the higher weight, typically higher numerical final drive, and higher parasitic loads from the larger components used. The 2010 HD trucks will be capable of better economy than their equivalent 2009 model due to aerodynamic improvements and the constant incremental gains in efficiency.

6.7L Cummins

GENERAL QUESTION said:
One question I have is why is the current 6. 7L Cummins de-rated slightly to 610 lb-ft of torque with the manual transmission? Because with the 5. 9L Cummins the H. O. motor was only available with the manual transmission. Manuals are known for handling power better than automatic transmissions so why de-rate the manual transmission truck??

You need to take into account the entire driveline not just the trans. With a manual trans we cannot monitor and adjust the torque supplied downstream like we can with an auto trans vehicle.

Hemi MDS an option on RAM 2500?

GENERAL QUESTION said:
Is the Hemi MDS going to be an option on RAM 2500?

No, due to the weight and expected operating cycle of the HD product MDS would not be engaged often, thereby eliminating any net benefit. .
