Just died today on way to work. Got a P1688 code - had replaced the lift pump (stock) - third one in truck - 3 days ago.

'99 2500 5.9L with 306,000 miles on it.

Wish it had gone longer, but no grounds to complain about it. Now, who makes or rebuilds the best?? I think I will put a Fass in it to see if the next one can do better.

Call Blue chip Diesel in NH. Nuf said.

I was asked to reply to this thread. My vp44 was replaced around 100,000 miles. My lift pump failer was the couse of the failure. My transmission is fine so far....knock on wood. But my friend with a 2000 cummins had his transmission go out on him with 130,000.. With a cost of $ 3000.00 .

Got the BlueChip pump - bought the "Best" since I am planning to keep the truck and be buried in it....or maybe on the Harley - maybe on the bike, sitting in the bed of the truck...?

Took too long, since it was the first one, but started immediately and is running good so far. If get another 300,000 miles, I will be happy.

I religiously change my 3 micron fuel filter at 15K and use the FASS to purge the air before starting the engine. I mounted a tee on the line for my fuel pressure sender, remove a plug and install a temporary fitting and hose back to my fuel filler. Bump the stater and the FASS runs for 30 seconds to purge the air, excess fuel joes back in the tank. Engine starts first time and still has original VP44 after 270,000 miles.

218,000 miles and still going when I sold it. Early on I put in a low pressure light and then later went with a fuel pressure gauge and never let the VP starve for fuel. But SIX lift pumps. The stock Dodge lift pump was a POS. The last LP I needed was the DDRP from Geno's which ended all the lift problems.

113,013 miles. One 13 too many... :-laf

What is interesting is that I always had a slight vibration coming from the engine since new.

Had the truck to the dealer three times within the first year and the last time with a Cummins representative who told me the same thing as the dealer, "it is not abnormal."

Well, just before the injection pump went south, that vibration had increased significantly. I replaced the pump with one from Blue Chip and the vibration was gone. Hmmm...

First one on my 2002 Cummins died at 85,000. Second one died at 175,000. I have installed several lift pumps but now run a new design Delphi. I now have a fuel pressure gage and I hope I can get at least another 100K on this one.

2002 2500 HO Six Speed -

First one set codes and had performance problems at 64,000 miles - replaced VP44 and lift pump at 87,000 miles (done under warranty - new lift installed in tank). I currently have 202,000 miles on the truck and it is running fine.

Just and update - I now have 253,000 miles on second VP44 and still running strong. At 251,000 miles I removed the in-tank lift pump and replaced it with a frame mounted FASS lift pump for easy replacement should it fail while on a trip.

My VP44 went out about 2 weeks ago at 143K. I'm pretty certain it was caused by my original lift pump that went out in March. Since I don't tow much any more, I have no idea how long it was out before the engine began missing while going up a mountain. I'm sure the VP was being stressed. I was also very lax on changing the filter....my bad. I installed a Blue Chip Saturday and was very happy with their help and timely shipping. The instructions the sent made the job a lot easier for me. I will be VERY diligent on replacing the fuel filter and am now running Diesel Kleen (gray bottle) in every fueling. I'm also in the process of installing a fuel gauge. I learned a lot from this expensive experience. I'm just glad I could do it myself.

Mine died after 10 years and 150k miles. Chrysler has TSB advising to move the lift pump from the engine to the tank. Dealer did that when they replaced the VP44. Contacted Chrysler and they replied no warranty coverage. Now getting close to 300k miles.

Still using the original vp44 @ 104,000. Always fanatic about checking the lift pump pressure with Cummins comp u check valve and fluke pressure transducer, went through three lift pumps then installed a Fass (?) pump two years ago. Checked the pressure last week, still 16 psi @ the filter head.

The problem with that is it can check out fine today and fail tomorrow. The only way to really prevent a VP failure is a gauge in the cab to monitor pressure live.
