I had a VP die at 53k. I also had the opportunity to get up close to the new pump today and it has a sticker on it 040805 which I assume is the mfg date in mmddyy (since it was replaced in july 05) or the remanufactureing date (i do not think new pumps are still being made).

There was a thread about what year truck and when the VP44 died. 02's were almost 50% with about 50 responders. Wonder why?, heat?

150,000 miles and still going

I have replaced one LP and my VP44 still working. Added a fuel pressure gauge at 80,000 miles. Pressures are perfectly normal.

I know radiating engine heat after shut down damaging the computer has been talked about. There is one shop in NH that sell VP44's with a different computer in them that I think UPs or FedEx uses in their trucks.

I bet if another survey was done that included failed lift pumps you's find it is the main culprit more than any other issue. Everyone I know has had the lift pump kill their VP44.

dead vp44

My dear 24V gave up the VP44 at about 70k after 3 useless lift pump failures. Still love the 12V did not even know where the lift pump was in 220k. Do I sound bitter yes because I am. No excuse for this to happen. don,t matter much now just old history.

5 lift pumps all before 50k and VP44 at 53k. It seems to me that the 02's have the most trouble. I installed Glacier diesels lp kit right after installing the new VP44. No PROBLEMS since

On my friend's '02 I replaced the VP (after 2 LPs) at 150k
my 99 the VP made it to 250k (and 5 LPs)
and the wifes '00 is at 200k and starting to save for a new VP, will probably replace it in the next 10k (on LP #2)

ok here is a thought . anyone ever heard of the fed-ex chip on the vp44 after i think its 25k or 50k key cycles the pump defaults to a service repair fault for emissions and they changed the board and solved most all the problems with that pump. think about it over 10,000 trucks dropping like flies from stop and go ,on &off running, they know what the problem is. bosch is making money and dont care about a few people but they fixed fedex's trucks and made a new board for there vp44 computer to fix the problem.

i have a snap-on modis and it shows the key count on my 01 what the heck do they need to count the key cycles for anyway if not that.

can anyone look at there trucks computer and look at the key cycle to see how many they have on there truck

to see what key count they have. and guess when it quit. might be suprised

i just got back from my fuel injection shop and i talked to the guy there about the vp44 he said that the pump keeps track of being reprogramed and the stock board will only be reprogramed 7 times the eighth time no go also he said that most of the pumps take up 3-4 times of calibrating and reprograming to set them up right from the factory, and when dodge does a recalibration put another notch

also the key count plays a factor on the truck mid year 00 they quit the recal fault for key cycles 98. 5-jun99 they all have it . nice tidbit of info for all the vp owners out there

good new up side if you have a shop that can rebuild vp44s they can get a board that has a upgraded chip he didnt say how many times you can recal the chip but he said its much more durable also they have the bakelight cover that eliminates the wire tap for all the guys running boxes out there
