just proving a point here. just wanted to see how many VP 44 have died and how earliy they have died for whatever reason. Thank u, Reb

Gone at 19K

Mine died at 19K. Occasional lack of power when cold. White smoke on those occasions. Nothing you could pinpoint. When it died it died completely with no warning (skipping, smoking, or low power).

VP-44 pump

What codes were set and is there a reason that they might not set codes ECM, PCM problems ??? On my 93 it was common to tell the tempature by the white diesel exhaust at about -18*C This the truck did regularly. With this one the exhaust was visible at just above O*C why the inconsistoncy Chrysler was no help as usual !!!! any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Mine just died at 69k this past saturday(12/23)! Merry ##### Xmas.

I thought I felt it stumbling but wasn't sure if it was the road or the truck. 10 miles later we pull up to toll booth, push in the clutch and the engine just shuts off. Thats it , a dead horse. Dealer says they will look at it when they can. What luck has the clan here had with warranty covering this? Any ammunition reccomended if they start to balk (aside from a . 223;) )

Sorry to hear that it died. Your warranty covers the VP44 for 5 years 100K miles, should not be a problem unless you have done something to the fuel system (bombing). Let us know how it goes.

Then what

So if your pump fails are they putting the same back on or what?? I am looking at a 2001 with a 6 speed it has 6700 miles on it. Whould this have the vp44 pump or is there another pump beside the vp44?? Thanks Justin

Justin, all 24 valve CTD's have the VP44. Odds are in your favor that you will never have a problem with your VP44. If the VP44 fails they install a new one, they don't fix the old one and reinstall.

Cool

Thanks As you see I have a first gen, so I dont know alot on the 24 valves. So what is the add ons to do to a 24 valve?? I know guages, then what?? Will I see a big difference in bigger injectors ?? And what kind of boost?? I am right now begging a 30# guage. Just so many guestions???? Thanks Justin

vp44

My lift pump was probably shot when I bought my truck at 51000 miles and at 54000 the vp44 whent out also, just died on the interstate. Now whith new lift and injector pump runing good but seems to get worse mileage. :( :(

2001 qc 4x4 stock yet but looking at options... .

dealer covered it

Selling dealer replaced mine under warranty but not until I had a heated debate with the dealer where it was towed to (closest to where it quit). Picked it up at first dealer on my trailer after I told them not to touch it again after they diagnosed it as the fuel line full of dirt which I knew was BS. Pulled sample of fuel and took it to selling dealer and explained situation to service manager. He replaced VP44 under warranty. I think they like to blame dirty fuel so they can avoid replacing under warranty. Word to the wise- if you have a problem that you suspect to be the VP44, pull a fuel sample so you can take it to an independent lab if necessary so you can dispute their "dirty fuel" claim. BTY this is the ONLY problem I've had with this truck and I now have 51K on it and it runs and pulls like a scalded A-- ape!

VP-44 PUMP

WELL just spent another $900. 00 on this thing and have to say that they found that the pin 11 wasn't talking through to the "MAPS" This brought up codes 123 and 0230. They said that the FAN was not locking up and was not cooling properly you know that fan never has worked come to think of it???? KIND OF LIKE THE DOG IT'S SELF they changed the MAPS and re,re dynoed it and found that it was putting down an amasing 165 RWHP for a 99 1 ton 5 SPD. NOT enough power from the 235 engine as far as I'm concern!!!!! They did find that is was putting out 35% fuel and getting an amaising 60 to 70 RWHP. HOW is one to drive with this kind of HP?????? That HP was form the dealership that I took it to several weeks ago. It still bucks and under load yet as well as at light throttle??????? Are these pumps capable of delivering smooth fuel flow???????? I still say that it is the fuel advancment soloid in the pump its self? I will be able to get the service advisor to go for a drive with me after Christmas and try to convince him that it needs more" HELP"This is wast Cummins found. As of today it is making more valve noise and seems gutless again.

You guys are NOT giving me a warm fuzzy on my fuel pump. I have 97. 5k miles, orignal fuel pump and starting soon on a 10k mile trip. Replaced the lift pump 5k miles ago.

What to do, what to do. New pumps and service are hard to find cruising down the Alaska Hyw. in the Yukon and N. British Columbia.

Jack I hope this makes you feel better. I had a "DEAD" lift pump on my 2000 and it was dead for I don't know how long, there were no performance problems with the dead lift pump. I discovered it when I got Briar Hoppers fuel pressure gauge. It was pulling negative FP  . That was at around 40K miles. Had a new lift pump installed and it continued to run fine. I just traded it on my new truck (see sig) at around 56K miles and it was still running fine. This was my experience. Hope that helps.

PS I think you either have a good VP44 or you don't. From what I have read most members that have the lift pump and then VP44 fail. It usually happens within a few miles. Other wise you have a strong VP44 and they are real hard to kill. That is just the feel I get from reading all of the lift pump and VP44 failure posts.

FWIW, my experience, put fuel pressure guage on at 68k. Lift pump was dead. No idea how long it was gone. VP44 died at 74k on a trip 450 miles from home. VP covered under warranty after they tried the bad fuel trick. But rental car and motel cost $850. I had done a lot of towing 10 to 12k trailers. My feeling is that the VP may last without a lift pump if you don't tow much, but the extra fuel needed during towing if not available on a consistent basis thru the lift pump will lead to failure of the VP.
