When I bought my truck the guy gave me 2 was of unopened aft+4 fluid. He had changed the fluid and installed a deep sump pan and temp gauge and replaced the fluid annually. Well I am getting ready to go on vac and checked the fluid and its down just a bit so I opened a new bottle and I thought it smelled bad in the bottle. Is this normal or has this stuff went south setting in the bottle? I didn't see a date on bottle but it was sealed when I opened it up.

Thanks

All fluid types have a specific identifying smell. And ATF fluids reek bad. Pull the dipstick on your transmission and I'm sure it smells just as bad.

By the way, oil doesn't expire like food products. Anyone who tells you to toss oil thats been sitting on a shelf is clueless about petroleum oils. At the very worst and depending on how long its been sitting around, you should make sure its not ancient and still has the correct ratings for the application, and just give it a shake to stir up any additives which have settled to the bottom over time. :)
