Is anyone here running an Atlas Transfer Case?

I'm doing a repower project & need an NP205. I was considering robbing a bank & getting an Atlas instead but wondered if there was any significant advantage other than the lower gearing?

They look pretty but really I haven't heard many problems with the 205's & I'm kind of partial to Cast Iron over aluminum.

Any input?

Marty,

I'm planning to run one in mine, but it'll be at least this summer before I get the thing. SUpposed to be nearly as strong as a 205 and they have more options, including several gear ratio's, splitting front and rear output, and they're a little lighter. I'm going to put one behind a nv4500 and use an advanced adapters adapter.

It is my understanding that NP205's are considered to be bulletproof. Go cast iron for strength. Only heard of one dude having problems, and it was/is my opinion that he was abusing the transfer case by turning it too fast. He had a low rear end, (5. 83 to 1) he was driving it on the highway. oil would overheat and then it would wear out. All that being said, may be a Atlas is more in line with your needs. Dont know much about them.

Atlas is a Heep replacement case period. It is being marketed as a anyone case now. It is a expensive, cannot hold any power, weak, shatters, etc... If you have a 4 or 6 cyl gas under 200hp and dont run over 36" tires then it might hold for you. Yes, it is popular yes lots of people use them, tiny low geared package very nice. IN the end a alumn time bomb. IT would be like blowing up a d60 rear and putting a d44 back in, it just doesnt make sense. rig under 3000lbs it might work also.

AT last check $2400 my cost with adapters and full upgraded ouputs.

Or build doubler setup, blow it up 6 times or so and still be less then atlas

or if lower gearing not needed, run 205, blow it up 12 times and still be less then atlas.

AA and atlas are just to damn expensive for POS parts period.

only real weak part on a 205 is the front ouput, but most if not all our 1 st gen dodges have the strongest output, which is an upgrade on most 205s.

The pullers seem to have pretty good luck with the 241-HD xfer cases. I can't believe they weren't popping right and left at the sled pulls in Muncie. It's amazing what the drivetrains will handle in these trucks.

I was told my the manufacturer of the Atlas that is was not strong enough for the Cummins. I think the 241-HD has proven itself well enough. Probably a lot lighter than the 205s which would also be an excellent choice.

the splined out put for the 205s in 1st gen Dodge are different than alot of the older trannies that ran a np 203, so you would spend alot of money buying adapters and getting a custom shaft splined to do a doulber. Casey at Wagoner machine sells doubler adapters. Their numer is 918-341-1722. I don't know if they stock a shaft that make it work, but I bet that they could build it. The Atlas is a strong unit rumor is that they patterened it after the 205. You might brake one if you are a serious bomber, but if you drive sane they would be ok. Ask advanced adapters if it would work.
