I purchased one at the TDR Nationals last month, and finally got it installed. First, the negative comments.

1. No hole for a pryo

2. No gaskets included

I e-mailed ATS about these two issues, and they replied that they used to drill and tap them for a pryo but stopped doing so as requested by a few of their distributers. My question is why not drill it?, If you don't put a probe in it, put a plug in its place.

They also said that they were working on a gasket of their own design. So I went to Cummins and bought some. (If some one wants part #'s, I've got them)

Now for the install, I was plesently suprised that the old rusty exhaust manifold bolts came out so easily. I'd been giving them the occasional shot of PB Blaster. I used a small 3/8 impact gun and the ones that it wouldn't reach, I used a 1/2 ratchet and broke the others loose:eek: some of them scared me!!! That was the easy part. The instructions say to use a rubber hammer to pound (their expression) the 3 pieces together. That turned into a ball-peen with blocks of wood, then I was picking the whole thing up and beating it together with its own weight. That worked;) I had some trouble lining up the bolt holes when I was trying to put it on, but finally got it. Oh, another negative, they supply allen head bolts to use, well on the centersection, you can't fit an allen wrench because of the angle. So I had to trim about a 1/4" off of a perfectly good allen wrench.

First impressions,

I noticed that my EGT was a little lower while driving, but I need to do some more driving. I was hoping for about 500 instead of 600 going down the highway, I'll have to go for a ride :D I think with this and an Old Smoky mount (which I've been considering thanks to everyones positive input), maybe I'll have the lowest EGT first gen truck!!:D :D

Thanks for the good post. :) A project never seems to go as easily as expected. No pyro hole? It's hard to imagine someone buying one of those and not wanting to install a pyro. Anything on the "SOP" meter?

Update

:D :D :D

That was the look on my face when I got out on the highway. While watching the pyro, I thought that I might of quit working, a few times I looked up to see it @ 400 on flat ground @70mph in 5th over. :D It really runs between 500 and 600 now instead of 600 and 700. Thats in 5th over which brings my RPM's about 1700. I really am pleased with the results, even with the install struggles, and pyro hole drilling. It has lowered the EGT's a good 100 across the board. One more example, a WOT run up a slight grade, 4th, 60-65mph, 24psi, 700. These are all pre-turbo readings, even though they sound more like post. :D  ;) For those of you wondering; a worthwhile investment.

P. S. Gotta love these smiles:)

P. P. S. glhs, Yes it looks just like the stock manifold, just bolt the heater tubes right back on the ATS

Thanks for the info.

I was going to get one for my truck but the folks at ATS said it wouldn't work on a 1st gen. I asked why and they didn't know!?!

I thought the tubes may have been the reason.

So, they build (Not "Repackage") this really cool part and are sure it won't fit the 1st gen trucks but DON'T KNOW WHY?????

Uhm... ... ..... right!

Are they different part numbers from the factory?

Are the gaskets the same or different?

Any ideas?

If it drops EGT's that much, I want one.

sgriffing

I thought the same thing.

I am almost positive they (1st gen & 2nd gen) manifolds and gaskets are the same. The numbers may have been superceeded though.

Doesn't matter; I will be getting one soon!

It'll Fit

I have no idea why they told you it wouldn't fit. They make them for 12 and 24 valve motors. I am pretty sure that '89 to early'98 12 valve motors all have the same exhaust manifold. Of course, I have been wrong before.

By the way, everything that I said is true, the EGT drop especially! Pulling my trailer today up a slight grade, in 4th@ 45mph the temp stayed @ 500, I thought that it would rise, but it never did. :)

I've been watching my gauge more than the road.

Wow, those temps are a good 100-150* below mine. Did it also reduce your cool-down time? Mine seems to take a while to get below 300* usually.

ATS also said they don't work on 1st gens. It just sounds like I talked to somebody who has never tried it or didn't want to. Heck, even their ad in issue 36 pg. 149 says for 94-2001s. Maybe someone should let them know about possible missed sales. Oh well.

More Questions Dieselman359:

1. Does the turbo spool up quicker? Slower? No change?

2. Did it affect your max. boost?

Thanks

Going to put an ATS manifold on a 92 tomrrow I'll post how well it fits.

When we installed mine, the back (#6 cyl. ); stock manifold; bolts where snapped off. -they came out easly with an easeout-

We're installing it on the 92 due to the performance gains (seat-of-pants & egt's) I recieved. in my case it lowered my egt's 50*f-150*f, much faster turbo spool - 1sec+ faster to 20psi with my PDR HX40-16cm: checked with a stop watch, cool down time is the same, interior noise was greatly reduced - though many of my perf. gains may be due to the fact that #6cyl was venting under the hood & not through the turbo. If we receive 1/4 of these gains on the 92 we'll be very happy & wont have to worry about cracks or broken ears.

Dieselman... . congrats on your install!!!... i just installed mine last weekend with the help of fellow member Larry Willard.

i wasn't worried about mounting the pyro,as mine is mounted in my pacbrake elbow... . i used the threaded post on the manifold to attach the heater hose bracket to... . we had to heat the original bracket and bend it as close as possible to the mounting post.

... with the help of another 2" section of flat pre-drilled stock,we made the bracket a 2 piece arrangement... . this seemed to be the easiest way around the heater-hose problem...

by the way,i won my manifold at the May Madness Rally 2 years ago!!!... guess i'll never be "accused of being too ambitious!!!"

good luck ... ..... tom;)

zjones, what was the results of the installation of the ATS manifold on the '92 you mentioned (difference in EGT's before and after). Thanks!

I'm curious what the seal between the center and outer pieces of the manifold are made of, what their service life is and are they replaceable.

If the seal is made like the ones on J. D. tractors it is made of metal. Looks like a flat coil spring and is replaceable. Boss has a 4430 tractor with over 12,000 hrs. and are still original. Semi has 16,200 hrs. , still original.

Joints

For what I remember, I think that they call them ball joints. There is no way that they could wear, because they never move (maybe a little when they are hot), and boy oh boy do they seal. I remember tryin' to pound the three pieces together, what fun. Seriously, they are tight enough not to leak!
