Thanks; That's good info. I tow very heavy, around 31,000 combined. I also run a Smarty, usually on setting 5, but I have to back off the throttle going up some of the longer hills. I have plenty of power, but not enough EGT headroom. I'm wondering: if you were to attack a hill at full, or almost full throttle, you would be simulating a heavier load such as I have. What do you think your EGTs would do if you were towing up a hill, and put the pedal down? Would your temps climb past 1350? Just wondering...

I've never had to do that, but I understand what you mean. When my egts get around 1100, it's usually low rpm, heavy load, with TC locked. With the twins singing, I would almost think my egts would be 900-1000 at full throttle and full load, but I've never tried it. Next time I hook to my heaviest trailer, I'll try it and let you know. For the record, when I've accelerated with our 8,500 trailer, there was no noticeable smoke, so that means I've got enough air to burn the fuel, which keeps egts down.

Have you towed anything with this system? I am considering this system, but want to be sure that when towing, the EGTs drop enough to justify the purchase. I've been the big single route, and was disappointed.

Singles and compounds are night & day different when towing.

Only issue towing with mine has come from the cooling system being unable to keep up. My pyro has hit max 1300* pulling 20K up steep grades @ 70mph in the passing lane, but the coolant temp starts to rise if I stay in the throttle. Granted it was 95*, 90% humidity. But I am no where near stock power levels and can pull past 75psi boost if need be. ;)

MChrist..... I'm planning on installing the ATS Aurora plus 4000 Compound turbo system very soon... I'm wondering if I should upgrade to the ATS Aurora plus 5000 Compound system instead... . Would you do it any different if you had the chance over again??? I have gone back and forth in my mind several times in choosing between the 4000 and 5000 ATS systems and always seem to settle on the 4000 system... What do you think?

Thank you for any in put... .

I don't have any first-hand experience with the 5000, so I can't speak to that, but the reason I went with the 4000 is so I wouldn't have to go with the required head studs and fuel upgrades. I believe there may be a 50 horsepower difference between the 4000 and the 5000, and I just didn't see the value in having to spend an extra $8000 or so for studs, second CP3, bigger injectors. Maybe by the time you add 50 hp injectors, you may have 100 hp more than me, but I'm happy with my performance. Remember, my truck goes 0-60 in 4. 4 seconds, and can light up all 4 tires, and gets 21 mpg on the highway at 65.

MChrist.....

I agree with you... I'm more concerned with efficiency and cooling than HP... I don't want to modify the fuel pump, head and such, only new injectors later on.

Thanks for the reply. Enjoy that extra available power ;-)

Oh, I enjoy it, alright... and to put things in perspective, I never even run Smarty on SW9, usually SW7 and 80% POD. So I'm actually leaving quite a few ponies in the stable!

Hello MChrist,

I was just wondering how your twins and everything else holding up now that you have some years behind them. I'm considering a similar upgrade. Do you have any advise or recommendations?

Thanks,

Hello MChrist,

Thanks,

Everything has been great! I would recommend this setup from s dependability point of view, as well as a "bang for the buck" point of view. I haven't had to touch a thing, other than the waste gate on the stock turbo sticking twice. Since I usually drive with a light foot, the waste gate doesn't need to open. As such, it gets stuck. When it does, I just go to my air hose and give the air line a quick blast of compressed air. That frees the waste gate.

I've been running very low Smarty settings since before last winter. I think it is SW3 and 80%. I forget the other settings. No matter what I'm pulling or how fast I'm trying to go, my EGTs never hit 1100.

That's great to hear, I'm glad you're happy with your choice. I like the fact you didn't have to modify your fueling system or head studs. Thanks for the reply!

Be aware that ATS doesn't make the 4000 twins anymore, only the 5000 and the newer bigger 7500 or something. The 4000 is listed on some vendors sites but it comes straight from ATS and they don't make it. I just went thru this - order 4000, got a 5000. Yes they still have the 4000 turbos and you'd think they could just put together a kit but the 4000 uses a T3 flange and the 5000 a T4. ATS doesn't make the hot pipe with the T3 flange anymore. I have the 5000 kit I just install then found both turbo got damaged (see recent post). From the little driving I did with it, it preformed very well with daily, easy driving so it I don't think you'd lose anything with a 5000 over a 4000 but gain some more top end, even if you don't need it. Only thing the 4000 was better on price. With any twins even the 4000, you can make enough boost to need studs and maybe springs. Of course you don't have to push it that hard, but... ...
