Yes I do believe they will be getting my old auto transmission back in good shape. When it started putting out a grinding noise going into second gear I figured it to be the forward planetary going bad. It was suppose to be a no brain-er and just upgrade to an ATS transmission. I ordered it on Thursday and it arrived on Tuesday! Three days later I’m out for the test drive. Again I have grinding noise going into second gear! Help!

The only thing between the transmission and tires is the rear end, drive shaft and…. the NP241hd transfer case. Back on the road for some more tests and I found that when shifting into 4w high it shifts into second gear just fine. Same for 4w low. Back to 2wd and the grinding into second gear comes back. Shifting into 3rd and lock up is ok also. Tomorrow I will check to ensure the transfer case shift mechanism is pushing it all the way into 2wd. It’s a straight shaft through to the drive shaft so what could it be? And why does the grinding noise happen only going to 2nd gear in 2wd???? ATS transmission was over 4k$$ and that was my Christmas present to myself. Now I’m going to have to dig deeper into the wallet! Help me out if you have heard of this transmission problem. Thanks. . -Ken

Well yours isn't the only one, Mine was working fine (46,000 miles) when they yanked it out, I just wanted a new and better one.

Sounds like the C clip on the out put shaft on the T case, it has happened to me two different times makes a sound like someone the dose not know how to shift a manual trans. grinding it into gear, C clip cost about $10. 00 labor to install about 1hr. get it fixed or it will take out part of the T case housing.

Broken Snap rings on the output shaft of the transfer case of the standard cab trucks are very common. Do a search on "transfer case saver" and check out an alternative. I have had two broken snap rings in my trucks. It will not grind in 4wd just 2wd.

thank you for the info. I tried that search and found /www.drivetrain.com/gillies/Tcasesaver.html . It looks like, what I would call, a split ring collar. I'm guessing that collar is right up aganist the bearing and keeps the shaft from moving foward or back, thus keeping the ring from snaping?

I'll pull the truck into the barn in the next few days and drop the TC for a look see.

You shouldn't have to pull the TC to do the work, all the dealer did was pull the drive shaft and tail housing to fix mine.

Standard Cab?

What does the cab have to do with this problem? Is the wheelbase and driveline angles/lengths the issue here? Not sure I understand this one. DK.

So what is the grinding noise. Is it just the shaft not being inline with the lower gears in the housing due to the snap ring. Would just puting on a new snap ring/or c clamp realign them again and hope for the best or should I open and inspect to look for damage. I have put about 10-15 miles on it getting it home and had to shift into 2nd gear about 7-8 times.

What do think guys... open and inspect or slap a c clamp thing-e on the shaft and hit the road!
