ATS manifold questions

First order of business, thanks Carl!

I ordered a manifold today, needing yet another project.

Questions:
1. I assume I should drill the pyro hole before having the Jet-Hot applied?

2. Where is the Jet-Hot company or is this a franchise?

3. I have some exhaust leakage when I use my exhaust brake. I am thinking that I should use exhaust gaskets. Anyone suggest a source for the gaskets?

If you are talking about exhaust manifold gaskets, you can get them from Cummins. My local Cummins dealer wants $1. 83 each (6 required).

The ATS manifold (with the Jet Hot coating) is my next purchase.

I drilled mine after it was coated. Goto www.jet-hot.com for more info. They do the coatings in Mississippi and you want to get the 2000 series coating which comes in Blue,Black, or gray. This is alot different that the standard silver and takes 1 week for the total process and may be longer if they are busy... . JB

edit ... i found it , its on #1 , didn't scroll down ... also drill the pyro hole ? i thought i saw tapped holes already in the manifold with plugs ?

MM, I've seen the same picture but I think its an old one. Newest pix I seen had slug casting but not tapped. Pete

Per the earlier posting, the pyro hole is no longer factory drilled/tapped. There is a place in the casting to do the pyro hole.

Bringing this subject back to the top, I just thought of another question. How hard do the exhaust manifold bolts come out? I have 89k on now. Should I heat the bolts before trying to back them out? Should I replace them with new?

QRTRHRS, ATS supplies you with socket-head capscrews (a. k. a. Allen Head bolts) for manifold attachment. These are constructed of heat treated steel (i. e. , they will rust if not coated , painted etc. ).

JB, did you have your socket-head capscrews Jet Hot coated as well?

I contacted ATS directly and asked about their manifold -- got an e-mail back from them saying the manifold was $460! WoW! Little rich for my blood.

Regarding the jet-hot coatings, why wouldn't we opt for the silver (chrome appearance) coating, instead of the blue/black coating?

I think I'd be doing this primarily as a way to dress up my truck, so the silver appearance is more appealing to me. I already have a lot of chrome under the hood.

I guess this has already been asked, (if so, sorry) but does this manifold really contribute a lot to increased performance (throttle response)? I have a four inch exhaust and a high-performance turbo, but I think that the BD exhaust brake (TDR review, notwithstanding) is the major "restrictor" and gaining a smidgeon less resistance with a new exhaust manifold couldn't make that much of a difference.

My cool-down times saw the most noteworthy improvement of anything I've done for the truck when I got my valves adjusted, recently. Before doing that, even the 4" exhaust didn't make much of a difference.

I wonder if ATS will just ship the manifold directly to Jet Hot, rather than shipping it to us, necessitating a delay caused by our having to reship the item to Jet Hot for treatment?? Anybody tried this approach?

Does anyone know of a link where there is a recent photo of the ATS manifold? I went to a few sites including ATS' without success. The ATS (Advanced Turbo Systems) website doesn't even acknowledge the manifold.

Go to Carl's site. ATS is one of the current offerings. It is from another dealer, not ATS. Still not inexpensive but substantial savings none the less.

Anyone, what grade stainless? 5? Should they be coated with antisieze?

Another Jet-Hot coating consideration:

Would you, or would you not, want to coat the mating surfaces where the 2 end portions seat against the center section? The coating prevents rust/corrosion, but if not evenly applied, could it compromise the seal? I am guessing it would be OK to coat this area but something to think about.

So, the manifold pitured (above) from Jannetty's site delaminates (Jet-Hot) at 1200 degrees? Is this manifold (the one pictured) already coated? It looks sharp as **** . What's Jannetty's price?

I called Jet Hot and they said the coating is about . 004" thick. I would agree that it would be best to coat the mating surfaces unless it makes it impossible to fit them together. I seem to remember seeing somewhere that the fit is close to an interference fit. If that is true, the pieces might not fit together if coated.

Does anyone know how much clearance there is between these mating surfaces?

Jet Hot also said they don't coat the inside for turbo applications just in case the coating might flake off. That does not give me a lot of confidence in their process.

Dave had the manifold polished and ceramic coated with cerma chrome by a specialty shop here in the Northwest. As with the rest of his engine compartment, it looks AWESOME! I mean, beyond belief kind of awesome. #ad

I'm also considering this ceramic coating for my ATS manifold and Banks 14 cm2 turbine housing although, I will be using (what else)... . BLACK. #ad


radixr, you can not apply ANY coating to the joints or the parts will not fit together. As it comes from ATS, it's a slight "interference fit" anyway.

I think i will be getting some Stainless ones in the near future. Sas... the reason am using the Jet Hot 2000 series because the standard finished that you mention will peel off at 1200 degrees. . But i have the rest of my exhaust(turbo elbow to tailpipe) in the standard sterling silver... JB

Hey Y'all:

Not long ago after installing an ATS manifold on my '94 Ram I described my experience in this forum under the post "ATS MANIFOLD: Be Careful!" The answer to some of your questions are in my post. I'll try to answer some of your other questions.

PERFORMANCE: Yes it certainly does enhance performance. Please re-read my earlier post for specifics.

TEMPERATURES: I chose the 1200 degree Jet Hot coating. While it's true actual exhaust temperatures inside the manifold may exceed 1200 degrees, I doubt the temperature of the manifold itself will ever be anywhere near that hot. Choose whatever coating you want but personally I think the 2000 degree coating is overkill.

DIRECT SHIPMENT: When you do business with Jet Hot you have to call their 800 number to obtain a quote and a customer number. After you talk to them they'll send you some paperwork with the quote and customer number and they will instruct you to send the manifold to the Jet Hot facility nearest you. You just can't send them the manifold because every order must be accmpanied by the paperwork you received from the central office. ATS would have to have tht paperwork in hand to ship it to Jet Hot.

ASSEMBLY: The directions that are included with the manifold are simple and straight forward. You must use anti-seize when you join the end sections to the center sections. I, too, was concerned about the interference fit and I instructed Jet Hot to coat the male ends of the two outside pieces and NOT to coat the female ends of the center piece. When it came time to assemble the pieces together I had no problems even though some of the pieces had the Jet Hot coating on them.

RUSTED BOLTS: My truck is nearly 8 years old and has 71,000 miles on it. The night before I installed the manifold I sprayed all the exhaust bolts with WD-40. I had no difficutly in removing any of them. You will have to buy new manfold gaskets as part of the intallation.

In summary, a Jet Hot coated ATS manifold is NOT a cheap accessory. But after installing it I wouldn't be without it. The engine sounds, feels and runs much differently now that it can breath freely. As I stated in my original post I feel the best way to get air into the Cummins is with a Psychotty Air system. The best way to get it OUT of the engine is with an ATS manifold and a 4" exhaust.
