Looking to lower EGTS for towing 12,00 lbs. Have read about the 2003 3. 5 “ turbo outlet neck vs. 4” turbo outlet for 2004's and up. Questions I would appreciate some advice on. Seeking no drone, more growl but not too much growl at a decent price with effective EGT reduction.

1. Running edge on # 5 setting. Is 4” exhaust from turbo outlet flange warranted to reduce EGTS ? How much, any fuel economy gain?

2. Concerning upgrading to the 4” turbo outlet, I see the options as Banks ($700 plus) vs. the factory 4” outlet and down pipe. Are there others?

3. Anyone that has done the 4” outlet upgrade, what did you use muffler wise and what was the cost, accessibility of parts/pipe or expertise to get it done?

4. What exhaust systems can you recommend for 2003’s and configuration?

5. Any of you that have left as I with the exception of replacing the muffler, what muffler did you use and what was the egt drop?

Worth noting, this is my horse hauler, client hauler, hammer down vehicle…it does it all. Need to be a little cautious about too much growl when I haul customers around (what a great vehicle! )

Thanks all

First off, how about a signature so we can see what you are driving. :D I went full 4" with a Magnaflow muffler, sounds great and got rid of most of that 2100 RPM drone that was common to these trucks. Also saw my EGT;s drop approximately 150*-200* in any given situation. Have my EZ on level 4 , 5 and 6 did not seem to agree with truck when it was cold. Stepping up to a TST PMCR box this weekend. MIGHT put EZ in classifieds. ;)

not sure where the sig went... here it is. Tks for the info

First of all, I'm no expert in these matters but, I have read on the TDR that the outlet of the turbo is less than 3. 5" and that the 3. 5" downpipe is OK until you start making incredible amounts of power.

What I did was to keep the stock downpipe. I bought a 14" Magnaflow muffler, straight-thru, 4" in/outlet, a 3. 5" to 4" reducer and some 4" aluminized exhaust pipe and built a system. The Magnaflow muffler that comes with the exhaust system is, I believe, a 24" or 30" muffler and I wanted more sound. However, I do get the "drone" but, only when pulling my 7000lb. trailer up a steep grade. It starts at about 2100rpm's. It is loud!If you don't want to put up with the drone, be careful of what you buy, as you are already doing.

I've heard that installing another 11" muffler in the system will eliminate the drone. I haven't tried that, yet, because the drone doesn't happen that often and it doesn't bother me much. If it happened all the time, it would be a problem.

Another thing to consider is the AFE Pro-Guard 7 Air Intake System with Prefilter. It's "supposed" to filter almost as well as the stock paper element but, move a lot more air. It should help drop your EGT's a bit, also.

If you can go to May Madness, in Las Vegas, next week, you will see a lot of different systems and get a lot of good info. It's a lot of fun, too.

Hope this helps, a bit.

You may want to condider going to somehting like a Pac Brake with the 4" outlet, that would give you an exhaust brake along with a 4" outlet. I did that with a factory 4: downpipe (85 bucks I think) and 1 straight piece of 4" pipe to a Donaldson 34" muffler to my factory 4" tailpipe. Only thing is it is whisper quiet and you wanted some noise. With this setup there is none and also zero drone which is much better than my Dynomax was.

Good info guys. First I have heard of injector failures ???? Right now leaning towards the Banks (Duck !) system for $620 deld in No Nevda. We pull altitude here and egts are my mission. Having trouble taking shortcuts when I have a 1990 Ferd ranch truck with an original Banks kit with 120K. Low mileage but solid as S___.

I'll say that is back-up ! First I've heard about this issue. I'm running the edge on 4 setting, sounds like I'm asking for trouble. Others experiences on this setting?

I also dont believe that unless you opt for a bigger huffer that your going to be able to tow 12K through mountains on level 5 and keep your EGT's in check. There's good reason that Edge tells us to tow on 2 or lower. FWIW, I really like my Banks system. Idle tone is relatively quiet, but pulling a hill you know its there.

RE: injectors; It does seem that we are learning new things about the HPCR rail pressure and fuel quality issues..... maybe somebody needs to develope a better fuel filter system also????
