Competition It's too HOT in here Man!

who makes the best auto transmission for pulling? my stock one has only 25,000. Would i be best to upgrade my stock transmission or go for a built one. I am shooting for about 500 horse.

good luck with this one--do your research, but I'd say DTT---you'll get opinions all over the road with this one---some of the other companies use billet covers on their T/Cs -which are heavy and have broken flexplates---but this could be related to HP and maybe not, but they get good reviews and bad reviews, but all the auto transmission guys do--you love them or you don't---some of these guys upgrade other parts and some don't--you need to ask a zillion questions to get a head to head comparison--again good luck... chris

stake , christan broke his flex plate , and if i am correct his BD convertor has a machined cast cover that looks like and weighs as much (??) as a billet one .

i'm sure i'll be corrected if i'm wrong Oo.

stakeman---I'm not sure the people who have broken a flex plate will say anything--like I said, it could be from the weight or a combo of weight and HP--the guys I've heard of all have some HP---I'm sure you will agree that since the TDR has changed in the last year that it's not my place to name the ones I know about---but there are a few----chris

Cool! Maybe there is a link between the recent flexplate failures and billet TC covers... .

I know of a guy that broke a flexplate and he had an aftermarket TC too... . hrmmm... .

Good thread... . keep it going... hopefully without flames.

I'd like to see someone prove how a stiffer, stronger, flatter, and heavier TC cover breaks a flexplate when they are bolted up to each other. I think instead it's realted to the HP some of these guys are pumping out. It's not unlike some of the failures that have been seen with ripping centers out of clutches. The only way the flexplate/TC could possibly move would be to concave towards the transmission (and it wouldn't move far), but there's nothing to push it that way.

BD

Who makes the best auto for pulling? That’s an easy question. BD makes the best auto for pulling. Enough said. Close this thread and have a nice day. Seriously, Chris Sutton is right, your going to get a lot of opinions on this question. I have a BD transmission in my truck and have been very happy with it. I tow a lot and I have never had a problem with my transmission. My stock transmission was shot so I had to replace the whole thing. With 25000 miles on yours your probably in a good position for a valve body and a torque convertor upgrade. Call the transmission vendors and ask questions, cut through the crap on this site and try to find someone near you that has an aftermarket transmission in their truck and drive it. It’s your money, (and a lot of it) your going to spend. Do the research and with what ever vendor you choose, you’ll sure like the difference after market transmission parts make in your truck. Jeff

:D :D :D

thanks for the help. I will probably start with a valve body and converter. Then, if that goes to crap i will call dtt. :)

dlange, this is just my opinion, but if your serious about the 500hp your going for,you better not stop at a VB and a TC,at 500hp,you better get the rest of the internals done right too,i only deal with DTT,they do a bunch of things to the internals, and at 500hp,a billet input shaft is a good idea. I am at 450ish Hp ,and you need a strong trans at this HP. No matter who does your trans, make sure its able to hold the 500hp you will eventually have.

snowman,

you are right, i called dtt and asked one of their tech what to do, and he said the ultimate fuel box alone could destroy a stock upgraded transmission. I asked him and he said that i would be best to put in a all new dtt transmission. The only bad thing is the cost 7000 installed. You have delt with them, does that sound like a correct number? I would pay it if the quality was there. But thats alot:eek: of quality.

P. s thanks for the info

dlange--you're right it's expensive, but when you want something to live at that HP you need to pay(many upgraded parts that are pioneered by DTT)---now that doesn't mean you can't cut corners and not use the full upgrade, but you're taking a chance and only you can decide if that chance is worth taking---the ol pay me now or pay me later game... . my DTT t/c and v/b have gone way beyond their means and should've gone up in smoke a long, long time ago, so I wouldn't even consider going with someone different as the new stuff much be flat out amazing---just my experience and 2 cents... . soon I hope to have the whole new DTT enchilada..... chris

I blew my auto transmission, even though I had DTT's 'Upgraded' Valve Body. I should have got the TC for $950. 00 at the same time but at the time I thought the VB would be enough for my EZ and DDII's. I was totally wrong!

Now my DTT completely rebuilt transmission is suppose to hold 1000 HP.

Cost was around $3200 + $420 towing bill. Still, very, very, happy with the results! J & H Performance Diesel in Redding ,CA. did the work. They are ex-Dodge transmission mechanics re-trained by Bill Kondolay and they have a LOT of Auto transmission knowledge.

I highly recommend them.

Powerwagon broke a flexplate this weekend pulling a mansion

it's a stock transmission too

They must be putting billet covers on stock TCs now.

I agree with snowman, you're going to need a stout transmission to cope with the 500 hp (and more importantly the 1000+ ft-lbs of torque that comes with it) on a daily driver. 7 grand is an insane price for any transmission, though. Fow what it's worth, I haven't had a single problem with my transmission for the 11k miles I've had it... while handling the 497 rwhp I made at the sheid rally. Staying locked up above a set speed when towing is a very nice feature, too.

i'm going out on a limb here and say that flexplate breakage could be more related to a misalignment of the engine and transmission , i saw a first gen that had broken a flexplate , this truck ate 2 inside of 6k miles , and this was after the truck had 90k and it wasn't all that modified , why this happened ????

banshe , the PCM programming is what keeps you locked up at speed , not the design of the TC .

as far as putting in just a TC and VB , or just a VB and thinking you can turn up the power and survive , not happening , the dodge trans as delievered is barely capable of handling stock power output , i'm surprised mine (and a few others) lasted as long as it did with just a TC and VB upgrade .

will the :-{} between the transmission camps really ever end ? this my lockup clutch is better than your lockup clutch BS is getting old .

the best thing that ever happened was the the TC resellers being outted for the lackluster product that was being peddled in the name of $$$ , we all have benifited from it . now get over it .
