Alright, enough is enough. My auto transmission is once again throwing temper tantrums in response to my motor upgrades. It's still useable, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

I wanted to wait it out and find parts neccessary to swap in a NV5600, but I need to deal with this issue now. What I wanna do is swap in the Getrag that would've come in the truck, since it'll be the most straight forward and simplest swap.

First things first, where can I find one, somewhat cheap, but still with life left in it. I'll buy a rebuild/reman if neccessary to make sure the thing lasts, but if anyone has one in decent condition layin around, send me a PM with a price.

Second, I'm gonna have a lot of questions. My parts list as of right now, having done plenty of research is as follows:

transmission

bellhousing

flywheel

clutch

engine to transmission adadpter plate (?)

clutch pedal (probably gonna make a generic one fit)

master cylinder

slave cylinder

all hydraulic lines

clutch fork

The following I'm not sure if I'll need or if I can use what I already have for my auto:

transmission to frame mounting brace

starter

transfer case adapter

4wd shift lever mounting bracket

lengthen/shorten front and rear driveshafts

I'm sure I'm missing plenty, so please, if anyone has any input, let me know. Also, if there's anything else I should know about taking this on, quirks, tips, and tricks, fire away. I'm all ears. Any thoughts on the difficulty of this project would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will need a 29 spline input on your t-case.

You will also need a hump from a manual transmission truck, as they are bigger for the Getrag.

The rest you seem to have straight. The starter will work, not sure on the bellhousing adaptor, though I'm thinking it wont reuse, either.

Hmmm, When I did my swap, I found a parts truck that had it all so it was easy. :)

Engine adapter looked the same but won't bet $$ on it.

Clutch hydraulics were one piece from master cyl, plumbing, to slave cyl. Easy to remount. Pull the big circular black plug from the firewall.

On my 92 and 93, the auto truck had the same non-removable hump shape and size as my getrag truck. I cut one out about 2" larger than I cut out of the cab I kept and made a removable hump. Handy at times when dealing with the getrag.

transmission mounting crossmember was the same.

You are right, driveshafts different. Depending on the exhaust you have, moving the tcase might be a challenge if you are already running 4".

I made the swap and would never look back.

Good Luck with the swap.

Ken, so are you saying I CAN use my existing hump, if need be? That would be ideal, as I dont have easy access to any form of welding right now. If need be, I can swap it and make something work. Also, if I do need one, does anyone have one you're willing to sell me? These trucks are pretty rare in the scrap yards around Milwaukee, I'd have to drive hours out of town to even have a slight chance of finding one. I may have access to one off of a 2wd manual truck, would that fit?

DP, I had thought the spline was different, what's involved in swapping in that 29 spline, and would I be better served trying to find a T-case off of a manual truck?

Thanks for the help, guys.

Personally, I'd swap out the input of the one you have- it's a known quantity, and the 29 spline t-cases are high priced. They'll bring a couple hundred more, sometimes. If you can read a manual, you can replace the input shaft.

If you cant get to a welder at the moment, get some Ultra Black RTV silicone and just run a thick bead of caulk around the hump when you install it, layering it kind of like Ken did, if you even need to replace it. Some say they are different, but Ken says his were the same.

2wd hump may work- I think mine has a relatively flat spot where a t-case shifter would come through.

I'll sell you my getrag 5spd if you want. It shifts perfect, no problems etc. . its a '92 and has 160k on it... I'm going to a 6spd getrag. . my 5spd is still in the truck if you want to shift it . . or have some one check it out for you. . let me know. . , Jay Leonard has seen it several times etc,... I probably won't get to pull it for a month or two. . been dragging my feet. . etc

Thanks

Right now DPuckett was saying he might be able to get me a fully rebuilt one, so if he still can, I'll probably go for that. Thanks for the offer though, I'll talk to DP and keep you in mind if he can't get to it. I saw your thread about putting the 6 speed in. Let me know how that goes, I've been anxiously awaiting that one ever since I saw your post on it. Thanks for the offer. Like I said, I'll keep that in mind.

Jay Leonard has seen it several times etc

I was shifting smooth and holding a little power I can attest to that!!;)

Lookin for cheap and easy right now, considering I'm down to one vehicle because (surprise, surprise!) my other truck has a blown auto transmission. I think cutting a hole in the floorboard to run my truck flinstones style would be an upgrade over my auto, so the Getrag will be more than enough... for now.

haha, matt you will destroy a getrag. with the power your pushing, and from what i know of your driving styles. the getrag likes to be shifted Slow-Smooth-and Square. i dont think anything about those 3 S's fits your personality. :-laf good luck :D
