I have an '05 CTD with auto transmission, 37k, 16 months old. No abuse. All maintenance performed as required. No leaks. Fluid levels good.

When all these things are true:

1) transmission is cold.

2) First gear.

3) Light throttle (less than one-fourth).

Result: it acts like it's trying to lock up the T/C, but shudders in and out, in and out, several times a second. Problem doesn't happen after things warm up, in any other gear, or under heavier throttle.

Ideas, oh wise ones?

I think what it is doing is trying to decide between first and second as there is no lock up in first gear. This has been reported by a lot of people here. Both my '05 and my '06 did/do the same thing. As far as I know there isn't a fix, nor is it really acknowledged to be a "problem" just an annoyance

Mine does the same thing. Also, on a 600 mile trip this weekend, my truck decided it didn't want to lock up the TC until almost 60 MPH. Wierd considering it usually locks at around 50

Thanks. At least I know I have company.

just a thought, im learning more and more about these engines. . what about a torque convertor lockup switch? I use one on my 12v and on my VW TDI. Works great. . Just an idea. . -Jordan

Not sure that would do anything to improve this situation. It isn't a lock-up issue, it is 1-2 shift issue. Since our trannys are still old school hydraulic set ups rather than the new style with big electronic management systems I think the occasional hiccup is part of the deal. Simplicity has its price, the price is generally refinement.
