Are the starters on a 1997 auto and stick the same?

I ask as it only occured to me after. My NV5600 bolted to the engine adapter plate, I did a quick check on the starter teeth and the flywheel, all looked good.

Then that little pesky voice in the back of my head has been chomping at me for the last few weeks..... :-laf

Motor was from an auto, now it is a 5600.

Thanks!

Robert

if you have the 13" flywheel then you need the starter spacer that sets the starter back about a half inch if you used a smaller 5 speed flywheel then you have nothing to worry about. on my 96 when I changed it from an auto to stick all i had to do was put in the spacer it was either $90 form dodge or $30 from cummins but that was back in 2004 when i did my swap

Yeah, I have the 5600 flywheel. South Bend Con OFE.

Guess I need a spacer?

I gather this spacer goes on the engine side of the adapter plate thus pushing the starter toward the front of the truck by . 5"? Am I following correctly?

Also, do you have the Cummins PN?

Thanks!

Robert

yes i don't have the part number handy but if you search for threads by me from around 2004 they should answer any questions you may have about an auto to 6 speed swap and what parts are needed for the swap

If the flywheel is a stock from the factory you will need a spacer if its from South Bend you probably won't need a spacer the way to tell is if the ring gear is behind the face of the flywheel you will need the spacer if its not you will not need it also some of South Bends flywheels are drilled for both 12 1/4" and 13" clutches so if there are 2 sets of holes you will not need a spacer

I do not honestly remember. It was over 2 years ago that it was installed!;)

I did order from South Bend for a 2004 5600 if that means anything!

Robert

OK Checked the flywheel through the inspection cover tonight.

There is teeth on the engine side, then a 1/4 or 3/8 thick ring behind it (back of the truck).

Sooooo, what does that mean?
