I had the same problem a couple years ago with a 2653 gauge but don't remember the style. From the beginning the needle would jump all over when I started the truck. Later it would stick at some point and not move at all for a while then jump to about where I thought should be. Then it would work fine until I shut the truck off and it would do the same thing all over again. Then it would not move at all so I called Autometer and due to the age (out of warranty) they would look at it but at a cost and then quote me on cost to fix it. I figured that it was mine so I took it apart and found that the torque motor that drives the needle had basically fallen apart. I ended buying a new gauge and have had no problems, works better than the first one ever did. They must have upgraded the design. Racers are supposed to use these, I guess they get replaced too frequently due to crashes to make any difference if they fail due to normal wear and tear.
