Aux. fuel tank

I am considering an aux fuel tank for my truck. My question concerns the hook-up to the main tank. I have read of people adding an electric fuel valve in their line from aux to main. When I open my filler cap, a lot of the time I will hear a whoosh like air rushing in or out. This would tend to indicate that the tank system is airtight. If this is the case, couldn't you just plumb the aux line into the 3/4" overflow line and just let it run into the main tank on a (fuel) space-available basis. It doesn't seem that you would have to be concerned with the tank overflowing if it is, in fact, airtight.

I don't know the answer, but from what I've read on the TDR, you should not be getting the "whoosh. " Many members have posted that their dealer left a red cap on the tank that should have been removed upon delivery and this is what is keeping your tank from venting properly and making the "whoosh. " If I'm wrong on this, somebody jump in and correct me.

Not saying this is not a problem but after 3 years and 65K miles, I fail to see what the problem is.

I have mine fixed so that I just flip a toggle switch. I mentioned that way to the guy that put it in but I let him do it this way. So far no complaints.

I have a 37 gal custom aux tank in the bed. It is plumbed to the main tank vent line just down from the filler neck. I have to open both gas caps, the aux tank valve, and then let it run in (takes about 7 minutes). The reason you get the "woosh" sound when you open the caps is that the caps will let air in (one way flapper seal) but not out (prevent polution). As your tank sloshes, or heats up, the vapors expand. Note: With my aux system you can't just open the aux valve while driving with this setup as the tanks and vent lines will not work fast enough or continiously, to let the aux gas in. Not as handy as a pump tank, or tank selector, but a lot easier to plumb in, and I usually am stopped for the day when I use my system to refill the main tank...

Extra fuel tank

Ramboy, yes it will work like you said. I just didn't like the idea of leaving that much fuel in the aux. tank when I am not around in case I had a leak. When I first installed mine, the next day I had some fuel on the ground, turned out my 12 volt shut off valve leaked through and my tank was leaking at the big nut that holds the fuel pickup and other things in the top of tank. If you put a line from the bottom of your aux. into the filler nozzle and another line from filler nozzle to top of aux. tank it will free flow just fine. bg

The dealer replaced my fuel tank TWICE because the

"little red cap" was still on and the fuel tank

collapsed(sp). I finally removed the "little red

cap" myself and no more "whoosh" when removing the

fuel cap.

I have a aux tank that I had custom built for my specs, I put it under my toolbox in the bed of the truck and it fits perfectly, it holds 52 gallons and the fill spout is inside the toolbox for security , under the truck I put a 3/4 inch ball valve for maintenance purposes then to a 10 micron spin on filter and housind, then a 12v solinoid valve (generic) with a switch in the cab, then to a 12v pump its a small one and I have the pump and the solinoid valve wired together so when I flip the switch I can transfer fuel into a "T" that is into the vent of the main tank. The system works great other than 1 thing, you can overflow the main tank if you forget you are transfering fuel, I was looking at a cab and chassie rig at the dealer and noticed on top of the main tank there is what I think may be a vent to atmosphere and I wanted to hose that back to my aux tank and prevent overfill.

I love my aux tank and would not be without one but if I had the chance to do it again I would take a strong look at the ones offered at www.northerntools.com

Ramboy, IMHO its still a good deal, look at other brands and compare price and quality and then re-evaluate. The 45 extra gals + the 38 in the main tank make a great combo and you will never regret it... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Kevin

I picked up a Tractor Supply catalouge, at their Temple store. It's about as thick as the Ram repair manual. It was FREE

I have been to the TSC in Kerrville and their tank prices are about $200 more for the same size tank that I can get from another source. They have lots of filters and other neat stuff there, though.

Ramboy, have you considered a replacement 60 gallon main tank that uses your factory sender. Check out aerotanks.com. They are better priced than Transfer Flow. I'm looking to do the same thing.

Yes, I have seen just about every aux. or replacement tank that is available. I want to have a minimum 100 gal. capacity, though. I have used a number of search engines for the net and I can still only find 5 or 6 tank manufacturers in the country. Must be a liability thing.

They are made in Dallas area and will cusom build. They also have an install kit w/ premaid harnesses/ switch ,solenoid and hoses/fittings. Similar to the Ford dual tank setup, switch tanks and dash fuel gauge reads that tank. I just ordered a 40 gal across the bed tank for my short bed. None of there stock tanks are over 19" inc filler and sending unit cover. Trans flow only has one that will clear a tonnau or 5th wheel. Northern tool tanks will /can interfear with 5th wheels.



If I recall correctly ( fat chance ) there is a DOT thing about tanks 100 gal or larger, most tank mfg's don't go through the extra hoops for the Jackbooted stoorm troopers. Thet's why most only go to 98 gal. .

I have a 95 gallon from American Tank. I don't care for the controls; but it was probably the installer, and the sucker went out of business. It works off the factory pump and gauge. Just flip a switch; after you stop and turn the ignition off and the low fuel light comes on with 35 gallons remaining, so I carry a "clean" stick, and you know-------



PS. Thanks for the tip on A-1 in Kerrville. They will put the DTT stuff, controller, Pac brake, SPA GAUGES in the 25th. No more gadgets this year. (unless something else comes along )
