Aux gauge lighting / wiring to allow for dimming

Finally got my Isspro tach, boost, pyro and trans temp gauges. Did a search, and got too many hits to review them all for my specific question, so here goes:



I want to wire the gauges so they can be dimmed at night using the factory headlamp switch (like the factory dash lights). Can't recall where I picked this info up, but can I just splice into the orange wire in the factory tach plug (I think that's the correct one for the lights) and run all 4 gauges off of this single wire, or am I asking for trouble? I know little about wiring, so I don't want to do something dumb and melt something - but then again, it seems these gauges can't draw much either. Any better/safer ideas or is this pretty typical?

Hey Clint! That should do it. I didn't have the factory harness for the tach but I spliced into the orange wire elsewhere.

There is a medium-small tan wire coming out of the headlight switch that controls the dimmer, for those of you without the tach hookup. That's where I got my light power from, anyway.

I tapped into the ashtray light, I was afraid the tach wire might be too small for that many lights. John

I think I wired my gage lights by using the light in the ashtray... it was dimmer controlled. I just eliminated the ashtray light.

I got mine from the radio, 'course I installed the guages and radio at the same time and the Sony didn't need the dimmer wire.

They only put them in the CTD's in the northwest, so we could find the ashtray in the rainy weather.
