My 2015 3500 sat for almost 2 years over the water pump recall. Mine had already went, shaft broke, belt broke, and other damage. Got tired of fighting with dealer waiting and replaced everything myself. Changed out fuel filter, DEF tank, new pump, hoses, etc.
I have staryed it for the first time and was wondering what the average temps should be around for coolant, Oil, and trans?
Drove it for a short while and the coolant appears to be in the 190-192 range. However I don't know where the oil and trans temps should be and didn't want to run it extensively if they are too high.
I will be changing the oil shortly and probably the coolant again even though I flushed everything out well, including heater core and coolant resevoir which had crud in it from pump failure

so my 13 3500 Longhorn runs exactly mid gauge on the oil temperature and slightly higher on the transmission temperature.... the only time I see higher water temperatures and transmission temperatures is towing my 5th wheel up a grade, and sometimes on a hot day the cooling fan will cycle going up the hills and the transmission temperature will climb.... almost to the next mark on the gauge.. as soon as we crest the hill... it all goes back to normal

Just for discussion purposes, has anyone connected a REAL temp sensor in 4th Gen te read REAL temps. Anyone know if oil temp is a log table based on inputs from other sensors? Has anyone proved it wrong or right? Just curious also if this is a Ram or Cummins development? BTW, my coolant and oil temps aren't far off from each other, just like they were on previous gens with real gauges.

Thanks in advance for the education.

Cheers, Ron

I checked it a couple times last summer when we were pulling and the oil temp was actually pretty accurate to the calculated gauge temp. I just use the ray tech in the front portion of the pan.

I haven’t on my 4th gen but ran a oil temp probe on my ‘05. The temp on my ‘18 looks accurate 90% of the time. It cools off too fast when coasting and doesn’t get quite hot enough towing hard up a long grade, otherwise it could have fooled me.

Not too bad considering how high the ambient was. Highest I saw was 228 before the fan would really come on.

I didn't know the oil temp wasn't realistic until now. I got in the truck the other morning and its was 64 degrees out, Oil temp was at 120 and I hadn't even started it yet

To my surprise I crawled under to verify so I can order the filter and it has an Aisin. I thought it had the 68RFE

Awesome!!

You can also tell by lifting the hood. The 68RFE dipstick is on the passenger side and the Aisin is on the drivers side.

The Aisin will run 163°-167° under most driving conditions, towing or empty. Stop and go empty can get it to the 170° mark and towing it will go higher. The highest I've seen towing in traffic is 177°.

Pulling long grades in 1st or 2nd gear below 20 mph (tq converter unlocked) it can climb to 190°-200° and that's acceptable.

Here are the trans temps that the ECM uses for fan control.

Fan engages at at trans temp of 194°F.
Fan maxes at a trans temp of 234°F

Fan engages at a TQ Converter outlet temp of 237°F
Fan maxes at a TQ Converter oulet temp of 275°F

I have a real Engine Oil Temp gauge in my truck.
I measure the oil temperature post oil cooler.
(My truck is a 2010, but according to Geno's, it is the same oil cooler all the way to a '20)

Empty, the oil averages between 10-15*F above coolant temperature.

Towing, engine oil temperature can be anywhere from 20-50*F above coolant temperature depending upon how hard the truck is working etc.

Same I saw on my 05, but only about 35° max above coolant.

I think I need to detail under my hood. Between the dust in AZ last week and the ash here at home mine doesn't look anything like Ron's!
