Axle nut torque procedure??

Can someone tell me the correct way to re-torque the axle nuts. I just did the rear brakes (rotors pads etc) and the rear axle seals. Reused the bearings. They looked fine. (138,000 miles) Its back together but nut by any special procedure. Simply snugged them and off we went. TIA!!

I like to do them in two stages, 65 and 120 LbFt. I also use a little anti-seize.

EDIT; I noticed you have a dually so your torque spec is higher ~ 135?

If you are talking about the AXLE bearing hub nuts and not the WHEEL lug nuts.

INSTALLATION

1. Install outer hub bearing cup with Installer 8961

and Handle C-4171.

2. Install inner hub bearing cup with Installer 8153

and Handle C-4171.

3. Pack bearings with the appropriate wheel bearing

grease.

4. Install rear bearing and install new grease seal

with Installer 8963 and Handle C-4171.

5. Slide hub on the axle tube and install front bearing

into the hub.

6. Install hub bearing nut with Socket 8954 (1) and

tighten to 30 N·m (22 ft. lbs. ) while rotating the

hub.

7. Back off nut about 30° and align next hub nut key

slot with axle tube key slot and install locking key.

NOTE: End play should be 0. 025-0. 25 mm (0. 01-0. 001 in. )

8. Install retainer ring (1) with ring end in the key slot

(2).

9. Install new axle shaft gasket and install the axle

shaft.





If you want the axle to hub they are 95 ft lbs

I did mean the axle bearing hub nuts. So torque to 22ft lb then back off 30*. What if that puts you nowhere near the keyway lining up? Would you tighten to line up or loosen. Lets pretend its right smack in the middle. As a side note. When I took the truck apart I couldve just about spun them of with my fingers.

I would go to the closest one. If it was right in the middle I would go tighter as long as I still had at least . 001" end play

Always back off not tighten!

Tapered roller wheel bearings generally do not have pre-load, so as Bob says, always back off. Having them pre-loaded will cause them to fail. Also new rear bearings should have at least some grease to keep them lubricated until the axle lube can reach them from the diff.

Axle seal started leaking on rear axle. Just wanted to know if axle nut socket 8954 is otc and where is best place to buy. Thanks!
