Which one of these turbos would best suit a towing truck in the 500hp range? I've never used a B1 but we have the HTB2 on one of our 03' trucks. I haven't driven it much but it seems pretty nice from the few times I did drive it. Which of the turbos is the toughest built?

I'm into the 500's (barely) with my Killer B2 but there's no way you could even consider towing at that level. It does tow very nicely however if I turn the boxes down.

hey why dont you try using a PDR Hx-40 ? Should give decent spool and be safe to tow. The B1's want to really spool up fast to move the exhaust out and keep the E. G. T. 's in a safer area. Just be sure to keep an eye on the bearing- check the movement or play in the impeller shaft after you start rackin the miles on her and when you start to notice more ' play' do your turbo a favor and treat it to a fresh bearing and you 'll be fine. That's what I used before I decided I really only wanted to haul-***. ! Now I have the B1 . And its Bigger Brother is waiting to join it. Good Luck

I would go with a B-1... . Running that size injector along with a Comp box would be past the reliability of an HX-40. On another note you will probably need some larger injectors to reach the 500 HP mark.

A normal combo I use for setting up trucks is Drag Comp, B-1 or B-1-2, and Mach 5's. This setup yeilds consistant 500-515 HP trucks that you can tow with.

hey Jet pilot,

What if I have a ETH pump that won't push the M5s what can I do to hit 500 or am I stuck in the 400s without a hrvp

I already have M4s and a reg. catcher gona reflash soon to special to run with a comp.

True or false? since both versions of the catcher fuel out to 3400rpms there is no need to run a drag comp and in fact a regular comp makes more peak hp anyway.

What was the $$$ and where did you go to rebearing the B1? Mine has 50k and has a little end play, not much, but I would rather rebearing it so it does not trash.

FWIW

One of the NWBOMBers has the TST/ Catcher combo in an HO truck with M4s and a PDR40. He's over 500hp.

Now I don't know if it's suitable for towing at that level, but it sled pulls like a maniac!!

Plenty stout performance on the 40's as long as you keep an eye on the shaft play... .
I ran 6's with mine and with some thermal barrier coating to help with temps- it ran fine- cheaper than that B1- more durable- maybe-maybe not... .

I also have a eth truck and with don m 4. 8 injectors I make 455 hp with out a box and around 550 with the box on high I didn't get a good trace last time on the dyno but it should be close to that.

back to topic,

the htb2 is going to be way to small for that much hp. I am running a htt puller66 and it can only cool about 400hp when towing. I have found on my truck as long as I keep the rpm above 2100 and the boost @ 30 It can tow very well and the egt will almost stay at 1270 even on long grades.

I used to have a htb2 (62mm compressor) no compairson to the cooling ability of the puller66 but man did that turbo come up on boost quick. I was able to pull 38 psi of boost at 1600 with out any trouble. I have to have my rpm above 1900 in order to get my puller 66 to make 38psi of boost with out getting any surge out of it

Call Olee Poole he'll get you what you need at the right price, but i think that i would go with the HTB2 64mm it has more than the b-1's 62mm wheel. It don't sound like much but it will make a difference in the EGTs

remember guys just because its bigger doesn't mean it will flow more... . The design of the wheel makes a huge difference in flow, heck even the material it is made of has an effect. Also remember the exhaust side makes a big difference if it doesn't spin as efficiently this again cuts flow and increases backpressure. I am not saying a B-1 is "better" than a HTB2, I am just saying that because one has a 64mm wheel and one has a 62 that the 64 doesn't always flow more.

I have DDII's and a KSB1-B and it is slow getting up to 10# then ok, but I am under driving it I am pretty sure. I tow and don't want to have EGT problems, but with DDII's the wife can push it to the floor and max EGT is 1000*. More drive would be good I think, you have to drive these things with enough pressure to get them to perform ie jetpilot's remarks.

Comments?

I have a KSB1B with BD3's. It starts to light around 1600-1700 rpm and then is off like a shot. My max EGT recorded was 1395F. I think that was on a very long hill with an 18k trailer. The comp on 5x5 I don't think I have reached over 1300F. It's a dream to tow with, I don't have to downshift to keep getting under the turbo to keep it spooled.

KSB1's are called drive pressure kings, so I've heard - watch valve stem seals-- You want to see a nicely done turbo, look at all of the HT turbos and you'll be convinced too. They have serial nubmers, models number and are not ground all to pieces like the B1's are. I have seen first hand a HTB2 64/12 and that will be the next turbo on the top of my twins. I don't know about you guys but when I buy something, I like to know that I can get parts and that I can contact the people who built the turbo and that they can get parts immediately and not have to wait on another company to decide on making more castings or any other part for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I love my TAD B2 but that B1 just isn't what it's cracked up be. That's why I went with twins instead of a big single, that and many other reasons.

That's an honest opinion I suppose but the track record over the past years seems to tell a different story. They are rock solid and perform great, ofcourse that's just my experience and I venture to say many others.

The B1 has been out a bit longer than the HTB2 but if you look in the classifieds they are filled with used HTB2's (at least the last time I looked) and nary a B1... coincidence? :-{} :-laf :-laf
