I went to my local parts store - Baxter's in Portland, and wanted to get some real good back-up lights. I found them! I've screwed around with all the frilly driving lights, fog lights etc and they all suffer from one problem - they STINK!. Oh they're ok when new - but that doesn't last. This is why. They are not water proof. Look carefully at them and they all have a small halogen bulb that fits in a container that is intended to be put on the front of a vehicle. When you place it backwards at the rear, they the water simply pours in, as there are holes everyplace. The solution - don't laugh - is a rubber tractor light, that is made by PM - cost about $16. It's secret is a sealed beam! Small about 4". But don't get the one that comes standard. It's only rated at 4000 candlepower. You can upgrade to a 110,000 powerbeam for another $12-13 each. You need to change the wire inside, very simple and I ran twelve guage directly to the battery, and a HD switch. Now Can I see to load my jetboat at those nasty steep ramps where there is no light. I CAN SEE!!!!!!! There are probably other solutions - but this is the best I've seen!

http://www.baxterautoparts.com/ is wher I got mine. I used the Delta Park Store - the Manager is Dave Mysinger(sp) - store phone # 503-285-2548 He was great and gave me the idea - actually he did this also - but without the bright lights.....

The Light is from Peterson Lights at :
http://www.pmlights.com/ The light is a V507. But be sure and get the upfraded 100 watt bulb.

This is briefly what it says - go to the Products List and look ubder Tractor and Implement Lights... Baxters has them in stock...

RUBBER TRACTOR/IMPLEMENT LIGHT-PAR 36
Durable, molded weatherproof housing cushions par 36 sealed beam from road shock and vibration. Universal 5/16" stud and adjustable, zinc-plated bracket allows mounting in any position. 10" lead wire exits through the back of the housing. Sealed beam snaps into housing for fast and easy service.
507 features 4411 trap. beam, 507H utilizes H7614 halogen flood beam, 507LU is the rubber housing only.

Sorry about teh spelling folks - my wife is en english professor - if she saw my previous message - man would I get razed for that.....

NAPA has had the rubber tractor lights on sale for at least five years, apparently they bought a load of them that was more than they needed,$9. 59
They are made to be mounted with the wires coming out the bottom,if you mount them any other way you need to make a drain hole in the rubber, they will fill with water and short out at the connection.

I used two KC 2'x6" driving lights. THey are 55W each, and I wired them with a relay, so they can be switched manually and when I shift into reverse.

Here's the mounting:

For some reason ... pictures won't post ... anyway ... I've used the Wal-Mart el-cheapo's for 5 years with 100 watt bulbs with no problems at all ... except for damage to the left one in an accident and the right one when I backed into stumps ...

Another try at the pic

Am I over-reacting to the issue of the light being sealed?

Perhaps it is more of an issue of how/where the lights are mounted? If they are on the outside of the bumper of course they will be more susceptible to water flying up on them from the tires. If I keep them tucked in, or what I was originally planning, mounted within the bumper, do you think I'll have a problem with water entering the lenses?

Thanks, Ryan

Take a look at this Tractor/Utility Light from JC Whitney. I have installed these on the backhoe of my tractor which stays out in the elements year round and never a drop of water or corrosion on them. My next order to JC Whitney will include these for the RAM. The price is right also #ad

I have the PM tractor lights, purchased from J. C. Whitney. This is my second set, the first set, on my last Dodge gasser, went 3 years with no problems. One word of advice if you mount these upside down, i. e. , bracket on top. They will retain water after rain, etc. I used to bleed the water off of my last set after every rain storm, I took another member's advice with this set and drilled a small weep hole in the bottom of the rubber housing. So far, no water has collected in the new set. Here's a pic...

hammersley,
Good point. I've been shopping for a decent set of backup lights, but I had totally overlooked the importance of the light being sealed.

Thanks for the heads up. It looks like I will contine shopping.

Does anybody know of any other completely sealed light?

I had the PM lights mounted upside down for 6 years - no problem. I drilled a little hole in the rubber cover to drain the water.

Yo Saint, nice rig. Nice pics. I am looking at doing many of the same things; ie: already have the Linex bed liner, but want to have them spray the lower side of my truck up to the rub rail. Want to put an exhaust brake on, want to put stacks up through the bed, want step bars, want back up lights, want want want want... sheesh. slowly but surely...

Yo Punisher!! And when you get all those things, you will want more, want more, want more. . That's how it is. . with us Rammers. .
