Clunking Front End

I have installed a new PSC steering box (actually on my 2nd box in 6 months) and Borgeson shaft. The box needed replacement, the shaft might have/might not have had to be replaced - but what the heck right? Since the swap of both components, I now have the dreaded clunk in the front end. I will be calling Borgeson next week to see what they will do for me in the ways of trying another shaft. Have not checked the ball joints yet in the front end, will do that next week as well. Will loose tie rod and drag link ends cause a clunking in the steering column/pedals?

Steering Sector Shaft!

I took my 06 2500 4x4 MC in several times until at 66,000 miles a bulletin was issued by Chrysler about a bad steering sector shaft. Had replaced under warranty and it fixed problems for about 5,000 miles. No the knocking is back. It is driving me crazy!

Any suggestions!!! I am going to fight with Chrysler about repairing this under warranty!!!

Good luck with your fight. But I wouldn't have any confidence the manufacture will get it right. I got a Brogeson in the garage now from Geno's (based partly on what Andy said above). As soon as I get a warm day, I'll put it on and we'll see what happens.

TDR Brethren-

I had to take my truck to the shop a week ago to get a injector looked at ... . which was replaced. While at the dealership I had them check my steering box just for grins. Apparently it was shot at 60k so I had it replaced and it helped a ton ... . with my steering (night and day). I plan to install the new Borg shaft soon and will let you know how that worked. BTW... My buddies bought the BD Brace that supports your steering box..... and they all swear its probably the best thing they have done in a long time. I will be ordering soon. More projects to get me out of the house. ;-)

Installed the Borgeson Shaft today. No issues and got rid of the clunking feeling in the steering wheel and in the brake pedal. The steering did tighten up and stop the wandering.

I got the shaft replaced the other day. It seemed to solve my problem of the small thump I felt at low speed. But it didn't solve my clicking noise in the cab on turning the wheel. Seems to be in the steering column itself. I did have an issue with the Borgeson shaft however. I installed the upper U-joint no problem. Then I got under the truck to do the lower joint and the shaft won't collapse enough to get the U-joint on the steering box. The problem was there is a channel machined into the inner shaft and a screw in the outer shaft that screws into the channel to keep the shaft from coming apart (there is a spring inside) uninstalled. We'll in my case, the channel kept it from collapsing enough to install. I removed the screw and it went on OK. I called Borgeson and they seemed surprised about my issue but said it was OK to not have the screw in. The shaft seemed other wise good quality.

MPruden, any idea what the TSB# and described symptoms were for the bad steering sector shaft?? What model years did it apply to? Have you been able to resolve this with Chrysler? TIA

It wasn't bad at all. Except for having to take it back off the steering column and them back out to "modify" it to collapse enough to go on the steering box, it was bad. Worst part was getting the stocker out. It wouldn't separate in the middle, so I had to finagle it out the bottom. The only other thing I didn't like was the locking nut on the steering box u-joint is just about impossible to get a wrench on to tighten it very well.
