I am considering installing a Banks Big Hoss system on my 2005 2500 Ram. I pull a fifthwheel trailer and would like the added power and fuel economy. Has anyone had any experience installing this system? If so were you pleased and do you have any advice? I have a 5. 9 4x4 SB. Larme. Automatic Trans.

You need to fill out your signature so we know what youre putting it on. 3 of my friends have the Banks on their trucks. It works great, but they have had a lot of cracked injector issues so we wonder if it adds a lot of rail psi. They all have have manual transmissions. The sysems are easy to put on if you are mechanically inclined and have a little patience. I really like the six gun dial that selects the settings.

Unfortunately with out advancing the timing, its hard to get any better mileage. And even when you do the difference is minimal. But of course if you advance it the emissions go up so Banks doesn't take that route.

Fit and finish is 2nd to None... the IQ is By far the best commander center on the market... Make sure when you take delivery do inventory on ALL the parts, the 1st & 2nd pages have the # numbers. . the Only compliant We have received is the tube on driver side is very close to the AT lines wire loom the lines so they don't rub on the IC boot clamps... It will take 2 people to install the CAC. Take time and read all the Installation manuals. You may have the trans Icon red on the IQ after installation take the truck out and Drive above 60MPH for 1 minute and it should be gone. The CRANK/CAM terminals are a little tricky so be careful with those connections.

Be advised if you are in an area that requires smog inspection you will have to jump through some hoops... ... .....

Bob4x4... I would have to check to verify. . But isn't the Six Gun tuner CARB/ Certified. . its only when you enable the speed load when it fails CARB. Or is it the hard parts on the visual?

I have the Banks 6 Gun and IQ and I pull a 15k horse trailer. It really improved the towing with all the safety issues taken care of. I added the banks TQ several years later and wished I changed that sooner as I picked up 2 mpg. I also picked up 1-2 mpg with the tuner.

As of 6 mos ago-last time I cked there were no switchable boxes from any MFG. s that were certified for use in Cali.

Banks doesn't get a lot of good reports because it's over priced and low on performance. The IQ is pretty slick, but can't be used stand alone.

There are lots better ways to spend your money and get the same or better performance. The Big Hoss says it put down 334/751 for upwards of $3,000. A Smarty Jr can do more for $495, without added rail pressure (that's good!), or airflow mods.

The stock intake supports at least 450 rwhp with a few cheap mods, there is no reason to replace it on a towing rig.

The stock exhaust can easily support 600 rwhp, again no reason to replace it.

The stock intercooler is pretty efficient. In 100% stock trim I only ever saw about +40° over ambient on my IATs, and two different testers showed that a 1° drop/rise in IAT equated to about 1. 5°s of EGT drop/rise so I am not sure the intercooler is worth it (unless you have a plastic one now).

Your transmission will also not handle the full power of the Big Hoss without some upgrades.

Personally I have found the OEM turbo to only cool about 350 rwhp when towing at elevations above 4K feet, so again the full power of the Big Hoss can't be utilized if towing in the mountains.

If it were my truck I would do the following.

Air Filter: Run the OEM 4” Pleat filter, PN 53034249AA

Airaid MIT: Better throttle response, quicker turbo spool, better sound

GDP Intake Horn: Better throttle response, quicker turbo spool, lower intake air temps.

Home Depot CAI: Cooler intake air, better flow at high boost

Since you have an 05 be sure to leave the directional vanes in the lower 90* intake elbow, they don't effect flow and Holset claims they help the turbo operate up to 30% more efficient.

All of these mods cost less than a standard CAI, and will out perform them. My IAT
s are 6-12* over ambient under normal cruise with those mods, where stock they were 10-20*.

Then for the added power you are looking for a Smarty Jr will work very well for you. On SW1 you will see an increase in fuel economy and about 80-100 ft/lbs extra torque without any additional fuel. Your trans will also be happier on SW1. I would run SW1, Timing Default, Torque - 4.

You also need gauges, Boost/Pryo/Trans Temp.

Boost, try to keep it at 35 max.
EGTs with a Smarty Jr for 04. 5-07 5. 9's.

TM1: 1400 max cont, 1450 momentary
TM2: 1300 max cont, 1350 momentary
TM3: 1350 max cont, 1400 momentary
TM4: 1250 max cont, 1300 momentary.

That's just my rule of thumb for when towing, noting official by Cummins/MADS/etc.

Good Luck!

AD. . again & again & again. . You quote form the Social Network YOU belong too... . Please post YOUR receipt(s) of Bank Products with install pictures. . Your integrity is already GONE so stop while you still have some dignity left before thats GONE. Yep. . this will be another challenge I will add to My list that YOU will try and weasel out with Keystrokes.

AD did you miss the part... Has anyone had any experience installing this system? BOB 4x4 shared form what he knows or experience. its was informative. . He left his views on the install out. . When He types it with the professional platform he stands on. Although at time I and Bob4x4 views may differ..... I would NEVER challenge the Professional Platform He stands on... ... ... ... ... AD you could learn form him. But I doubt you would ever be humble enough to accept it... I'm sure you will rebuttal with the same level of effort that tantamount to Keystrokes. . like always.

For someone who claims they don't make things personal you sure seem to get your panties in a bunch by anything I have to say. Are you afraid you may lose a sale? Certainly you are aware that your attitude is why you would lose it over another vendor.

I'm not sure why published Banks prices and dyno sheets are social media, you apparently have a much different definition of the word.

Tom,
I am running the equivalent of the Bank's Stinger System with Banks IQ, (only difference is I am running a full 5" turbo back exhaust instead of the banks exhaust) When I spoke with Banks they indicated, as does their literature that they do not rate or recommend the Big Hoss Kit for Towing. This is why I went with the Stinger System, with plans to upgrade it down the road to the Power Pack kit (requires addition of an upgraded inter cooler and upgraded tuning from Stinger to Power Pack). The Power Pack was the largest kit Banks rated for towing. It is not uncommon for folks here to believe that Banks is overpriced and under powered. I myself had a nasty run in with Banks over the purchase of my system and posted about it on the forum. At the end of the day I am satisfied with the product I bought and the price I paid for it. I still think Banks' customer service is despicable.

But their product has delivered what I expected thus far. Based on my experience I will likely not buy their intercooler or torque converter when the time comes, but rather look at BD Diesel. But in the end the Stinger kit does exactly what I need and the Banks IQ is a great interface, only wish I had bought it before I bought a GPS, having navigation built in would have left my windshield less cluttered.

I found AH64ID's post to be very informative. He gave the OP another option/opinion/facts. The more info the OP has, the better informed he is to make a decision. Seems like he gave an option to save approx $2500 for a similar level of performance... That is helpful info IMO.

The OP clearly stated on Install..... He ask for advice on the System. . Not alternatives or opinions. Now the the OP may have ask for Alternative in additional post, and he still may. Until he ask, I will keep Alternatives to myself.

Agreed. Well stated.

OK off topic. . AD stated that factory trans will NOT hold the power of the Big Hoss Kit. We have several owners with this kit form 03-07 on factory Trans. Most have over 100k with setup. Yep. . you can make power with many different add-ons. . The statement that Your factory Trans will NOT hold up to the Power is false. . The facts are if you upgrade your foot Most factory 48re will hold up well.

Fact 2: how can you comment on something you have never Installed, sold, or own?

AD I am still waiting for the phone call accepting any challenge I have offer You... . What I like about phone calls... People don't hide behind users Names. Back ground checks can be done to validated who owns the phone, People that don't have things to hide (Like Phone calls) they like to identified Who they are exchange info to see weather it is credible or not. . It always seems that those who offer advice on every subject that cannot be verified come up dirty. With some type of history thats shameful to relate.

Todd: I have nothing to hide, but don't need to waste any of my time talking to you. I talk to plenty of people from the forums over the phone, but talking to you is not worth my time. You have a personal issue with because I have pulled the BS flag on the info you have been feeding people around here. Time and time again you provide false data to the forums (yet complain about the false data on the internet). It's simple, you either don't know what your typing or what your talking about but your so full of yourself that there is no getting thru to you, so I have no reason to waste my time. #ad

The only thing of shame around here is your presence, and your attitude. For every good point you bring to the forum you have a dozen that are useless and a waste of space, I mean you have tried to tell us that the CP3 defies physics

As a generalization the stock trans is good for about 100 rwhp over stock in a DD application, and about 70 over stock for towing. Yes this is a generalization (as some can destroy them on a stock tune in an afternoon), based on many 48RE owners over nearly the last decade of use. Talk to transmission shops, mechanic shops, and owners. Is it possible to go over that and live for a while, certainly, but that's not the norm or average.

I know you don't believe what manufactures say, but the Big Hoss is not a towing setup. There could be a myriad of reasons, but trans/clutch/turbo come to mind. They even talk about heavy towing and added power exceeding the limits of the stock torque converter.

Bottom line, if the OP wants a Banks kit he can buy one, they are generally of exceptional quality (thou I agree on their customer service being crappy!), just low on performance for the money and see you parts that are not needed. If a owners bottom line is a little better performance and a little better economy he can do it for less, and if he is looking for economy he is probably trying to save a little cash, and nothing like 2K+ in savings. Heck he could do some trans work for added insurance and still be money ahead.
