all,

i just installed a banks monster exhaust on my 03 ctd. it was slick on the install. got it all put together, fired it up, and... ..... quiet. OBNOXIOUSLY quiet. i don't know how in the world a straight-through muffler is so quiet? i was expecting more of a roar and some turbine whistle - nothing, nodda! :( i don't understand how some posts complain of it being too loud - the only change is the note of the exhaust, it is bit more throatier.

i stick by the premise that i bought the best 4 incher out there, i was just hoping it had some more "sac".

i have no drone - never had done before either

what does a guy have to do to get turbo whistle -- besides taking out the eliminator and silencer ring? turbo?

that turbo (HY35) is another story, talk about your mini-me turbines, it is about an inch and a half in diameter (after close inspection while installing the exhaust). the 4" pipe dwarfs the turbine - a 5" system would be an even bigger waist of "tubeage" with the HY35.

not the end result i was expecting :(

How does the truck run with the Banks exaust? I'm not interested in making my truck louder, I would just like a little more performance.

Sticking on a more free flowing intake (air cleaner) will be the easiest way to get the trubo whistle to come to life.

i currently have a donaldson BHAF (fleetguard 19037 equivelant) that supposedly flows upper 600 cfm range.

a consultant at banks told me there is a 18 hp and 27 ft/lb gain w/the monster ex.

SOP: the truck is much more responsive with the new exhaust

it truly is a slick system: the downpipe, new muffler and double walled tip are TRUE works of engineering art -- i just would like more turbo whistle

with the tiny HY35 turbo, i would describe my truck as more of a whiner than a whistler -- i don't like whiners :D

RDietze,

I'm thinking about installing the same system. I would also like to install an exhaust break at the same time. Did you install the Banks break?

i did not install the banks brake - i believe if you go with the banks exhaust you have to use their brake... or vice-versa

do a search on banks brake - i recall a good discussion a few months back discussing the compatibility and such

I have the banks exhaust and don't feel any improvement under normal use, it actually feels like I lost a few ponies. When I get a fuel/timing box on it I think it will be a good thing.

i'm thinking of a scotty 3 (mostly for massive cold air induction). you would think i have plenty of whistle w/bhaf but i do not. my powerstoke literally "sings" with a bhaf

I got a instant 1 to 2 mpg increase with the Banks exhaust. Seems more responsive. I'm glad I didn't use another system cause I thought mine was louder then I like. Its mellow. Wife says it sounds like a nice sounding BIG rig.

:) I must agree with the installation of the Banks Monster, installed wonderfully, looks great and for me the sound is just right when you stand on the go pedal. I also noticed a instant gain of roughly 1-2 MPG upon the installation of the system. I 'm sure my MPG gain will become negated if I can't keep my foot from sinking to the floor though. :D

MPG INCREASE

i just went on a 3 hour road trip with 70% freeway and 30% city - got 22 mpg - previous best was 18 mpg w/100% freeway. it was a great feeling to finally break into the 20s - one of my primary reasons for buying this truck over a furd. it will be interesting to see where my day-to-day mileage levels off at

i'm getting used to the sound of the banks, the cummins definately has its own distinctive sound.

very pleased w/ my banks 4"

i pulled the ring high flow air filter and 5" exhaust. when i am in 1st gear creeping in a parking lot and smash on the clutch you ought to hear the turbo spool down sheeeeeeeeeeee.

what i dont like about the sound i have is at idle it is airy.

i think i am going to try a donaldson

i have noticed that after using royal p the turbo takes alot longer to spool down. the moly is doing its work by nano polishing the turbo bearings:D

RDietze,

Does the Fleetguard 19037 equivalent fit in a '03? I didn't think there was enough room. I had one on my '01 and loved it.

The first thing I did with my truck was put on an exhaust and intake. Truck felt a little livelier but on the dyno hp gain was zero. The OEM setup really isn't restrictive at stock power levels insofar as limiting top hp. You might note that Diesel Dynamics and quite a few others promise no hp increase whatsoever with their systems.

Benson,

I put the Donaldson BAHF in and had an adapter made for it. It fit standing up where the original filter box went (with a "little" pushing/shoving). The clearance to the hood only allows about 1 5/8" between the top of filter and the hood in one area. Only problem I had was to get enuff air flow out of the adapter. Think we solved the problem by going wider and having the adapter set on the outside of the ring on the filter. Took about a day of building/testing to get it made. Lots of $$ spent also (labor time). but it was a learning experience for both of us. Am happy with it and hope to get lots of miles out of the filter before change out. Was told that the filter could be cleaned by the mfgr. This would ave $$'s if its true and will eventually find out. Friend who told me says its about 30$ and can be done about 3x's. Dont have the filter # handy but it starts with a PA, i think.

SOTSU!!

Thanks Ben. I may look into this operation. Otherwise I guess I'll take the AFE plunge. Must have more air you know.

GETTING AWAY FROM THE TOPIC, BUUUUUUUUT.....

i had this post on dtr - regarding BHAF IN AN '04

i have one on my 03 - the big donaldson B105006 (fleetguard 19037)

i'm sure the 04 are identical under the hood

i have it sitting at a 45* angle where the old airbox(block) was - used a 4" mandrel bent pipe - i shortened it buy cutting off the ends (of the 4" pipe) and clamped it place.

it's tight but it is functional - just sits in there

the good - it's a bhaf, flows upper 600ish cfm

the bad - hot air from the radiator blows on it, needs better "rain proofing" (outerwears.com)

alternative - i'm getting a scotty 3 from www.westtexasturbodiesel.com - got a good deal from wttd

i wanted to go the the fleetguard AH 19004 which is a marine application BHAF that is the same size as the 19037 and is suppose to flow low 900ish cfm. but i still would not resolve taking a "hot air" suction from the engine compartment - so i went with the scotty 3. plus, the 19004 runs about $120, initially that wouldn't be a big thing but having to keep replacing the filter every "x" number of miles would have been a "bleeder" on the pocket book -- i don't like bleeders. right now there is no "hot air" problem as it is 20* here :D

my set up was not as extravagant as \\SOTSU!//s = less time, less labor and less $. i thought of something like \\SOTSU!// but i didn't like another full 90*bend and i thought there would be hood clearence problems as disscussed by \\SOTSU!//
