Competition dyno testing

What a day! Tons of trucks (big and small) were running at Bandimere. Thanks to all that came and raced and watched.

Banks showed up with the Sidewinder for the first drag race that they have tried. They did a bit of 1/8 mile testing, but no full runs. Truly, the truck is one impressive piece up close. Great workmanship and engineering.

Banks has a ATS Trans and TripleLoc in the truck and an Emjay controller. The engine is a pretty conservative build-up, not the killer one they ran at B-Ville.

Banks made 2 single passes, (as did we with the dragster) getting in the 12 'teens as a best.

We ran our best right off the trailer, 9. 31 at 139 and change. Our second pass, we blew way too much NO2 in for the 3rd gear change, and put the fire out, 9. 89.

3rd pass, we ran side by side, and it was a great shot off of the starting line. Both hit a good RT, Sheldon in the Banks truck at a . 019 , and Dustin in the dragster at . 035. We both slowed for similar reasons, the Banks truck hit neutral, and we short shifted into 3rd, and went flat. Final was a 10. 12 vs 12. 70.

60 ft times on the dragster went as low as 1. 271 on the first pass, and Banks hit 1. 875 on the final.

The dragster has a bunch left in it, and so does the Banks truck.

Again, great day, thanks to all!

Thats interesting, I'm curious why they didn't run the B-Ville engine? Thats the one was wanting to see. Was it still a newer 24v??? Or was that changed too? Its interestingto me since the Garmon Dakota runs low 12's too, with a mild 12v engine.

It's my understanding that the only "change" to the engine at all is a different set of injectors. They weren't changing engines last I heard. :)

Kat, the banks guys told me that it is a new ISB-e only about 100 horsepower less than the motor used at the flats. They did not give any other details than that. They did say this was the first time they have ran down the 1/4 mile strip with the thing. They built it for the flats thing, not drag racing. They were excited to be drag racing it though.

Ok, please enlighten me. A Reaction Time of 0. 019??? :--)

I thought 0. 5 was fairly good. How is it even humanly possible to be on the order of 2/100ths of a second?

Some tracks they just changed the way its listed on the slips. It "Starts" at . 000 now, not . 400 or . 500. So basically that would have been a . 519 in the other format if they were using a . 500 tree.

RIght now the Garmon's Dak has a best of a 12. 08, I can't remember the time. David might step in and help me out.

Also don't forget, the Banks team also failed to mention in the publicized articles that the B-ville runs were made with some insanely low-geared rear end, also changed between the towing arrival and the runs, not just the injectors. Don't get me wrong, anyone with the guts to drive a brick at 220-mph has my respect, but put a low enough rear-end into say the Garmon Drag truck, and it could probably get real close to that speed. JMHO.

The gentleman from Banks told me the rear end was 1. 92 or 1. 96, I forget exactly which. The one used at Bonneville was a different rear end, a quick change. The one used in Denver looked like a 9 inch. In addition, at Bonneville they use an overdrive also. It would be interesting to run the numbers and see how much gear you would need in order to keep under 3800 rpm and still make the speed.

I caught the first run, Scott, it looked great. Thanks for having the dragster out for everyone to see. It's great just being able to see something for yourself, trying to mentally fit all the pieces together!

Thanks for the Compliment

Sincerely, thanks. We get a lot of questions and comments, and actually one of the best was Gale Banks. He was genuinely intersted and intrigued with the dragster, and admired our craftsmanship. Found out a mentor of mine that runs B-Ville is someone Banks works with on tires. He is a class guy.

We are dedicated to even quicker times, we have only scratched the surface. Seriously, we have SO much more fueling ability, but matching the torque converter, fuel and air to get the fast response is tricky.

sbentz, Are you going to be able and make it over to Utah for our Drag race on Sept 14th??? It would be way cool to have you over on this side of the Rockies:D  :D

Altitiude factor?

So who else has run low elevation (less thann 1500 ft) and then came to Denver? Curious how it affected everyone. We are used to this poor thin hot air, and wonder what it would be like at sea level...

I would love to have both the Dragster and the Sidewinder here in Atlanta September 5-6 for the Division 2 race. Would be interesting to see how this air at 1200 feet would compare.

I have not talked to Clint but I am hoping the ATS crew considers making the trip again but I understand they have their own division to race in this year. Was a fun weekend last year, you get to race in front of a ton of spectators, run on a 1st rate NHRA owned track, and we will be spraying the crap out of VHT.

We should have everything from all the way down to the 10's here but it sure would be nice to have a 9 here. (or maybe even an 8 down here ;) )

:D

Scott:

Although I am a little "late" posting this,..... CONGRATULATIONS

to you and your son on winning the race with the Banks

Sidewinder!! It was a pleasure to have finally met both of

you and I am glad I was at the Denver Truckfest to see your

dragster in action!:) I had heard so much about it from Clint

and the ATS crew. The runs you made were very impressive

to say the least.

Seeing that purple ATS transmission under that Banks Sidewinder

truck was pretty impressive also! I guess old Gale wanted

the best in an automatic transmission and he sure got it, but

you and I already knew that!!;)

Take care and good luck to you guys!
