Is anyone running a Banks Technicooler with an aftermarket turbo? I am wondering whether or not the supplied Banks intercooler pipe will work with aftermarket turbos...

I really hope so, because I have one sitting in my front room :-laf

Great, I do hope it works as well with my Edge BB turbo... I am concerned about some of the geometries and plan on doing this Thursday... I just want to make sure it is a straight bolt on for my turbo before I tear my truck down... It is boating season and I will need to have it available for the weekend :D :D

Thanks, Bill

Well, the answer to the question is no, it will not bolt right up to the Edge ball bearing turbo... The edge compressor outlet is 3. 5 inch instead of the stock 3. 0... No problem, I have a 3. 5x3 hose coming ( Thanks Keith!). Also the angle is going to be funky on the turbo to intercooler pipe. I may try to go to midas and see if they can bend me up something that will have a little straighter run between the hose and pipe. .

I have to say, I am VERY impressed with the looks of this intercooler! The difference between this and stock is incredible. The only issue that is not a straight foreword affair is the aforementioned turbo to intercooler pipe.

I really am not bummed about this as I don't need the truck for another week and am sure I can get a pipe bent somewhere.

Cheers

Finished!

OK, I need to update my prior posting a bit as it had some inaccuracies...

The compressor outlet of the Edge Ball Bearing turbo is 3. 00 inches... Stock is of course 2. 75 inches.

The banks technicooler inlet tube is 2. 75 inches at the compressor outlet necked up to 3. 5 inches after about a 4 inch long ramp up.

Now you see my problem. Edge = 3. 00 inches at the compressor outlet. Banks inlet pipe 2. 75 inches at the turbo end...

Boy, I need to find someone that can make me a 3. 5 inch pipe necked down to 3. 00 inches and bent precisely to work in my truck ... Yah Right! Without the truck on property, good luck... Hmm what combination of cutting and welding do I need??? Damn, a 3. 5 inch intercooler pipe will get in the way of my cool blue hose and my bypass line... . Ding! The Intercooler pipe that came with the Edge BB turbo is 3. 00 inches right? of course... Ok, does it run to the Banks technicooler correctly? Not really, it is too long as the Banks has a massive 3. 5 inch diameter inlet dumping to equally massive tanks... . OK, chop saw time... I cut about 2. 5 inches off of the length of the 3. 00 inch diameter Edge intercooler pipe and it lined up pretty gosh darn close... I filed and sanded the cut edge, cleaned it of chips then got a 3. 00 to 3. 50 inch adapter hose to connect the Edge intercooler pipe to the Banks technicooler.

Of course this bolted right up to the Edge BB turbo compressor outlet as it came with it! The angles and runs were almost perfect.

So, the end result is that I am not using the Banks 3. 5 inch intercooler pipe, I am using 3. 00 inch all the way from the turbo compressor to the Banks technicooler... I do not feel that I am restricting flow much at all over what Banks offers as theirs necks down to 2. 75 inches. .

It was raining today (yes, we get about 5 days a year of it) but what I could tell is that the turbo spools even quicker. I only got up to about 18 lbs of boost, roads were wet and I would have broke the back tires loose.

I can give no EGT comparison, as I couldn't drive too hard... I have no doubt this thing is going to work well, it is massive when compared to the stock intercooler and the Banks High Ram has to flow a heck of alot better than the puny stock manifold... . I painted it black...

The best thing is that I got rid of that plastic tanked pos stock intercooler!

Anyway, I am going to tow an 8,000lb boat tomorrow and that will be a great test of the difference this thing makes.

It's too late, but for future reference here's some other sources for reducer hose:

I was thinking about doing the same as you in regards to modifying intercooler pipes when I was going to install my BD twins in a few weeks with my already installed Technicooler... then I stumbled upon those web-sites above and it will save me some fab work.

I actually saw this thread when you first posted it and then I was going to answer and forgot! Sorry!

Hey, no worries! Keith at Diesel Dynamics hooked me up with the reducer. Funny, I can hear more turbo wine now :)

Thanks for the links

Cheers!
