This afternoon while I was under the beast opening the oil drain plug ... I noticed water ??hmmmm?? running off the intake tube on the drivers side ... . stuck my finger in it ... took a sniff ... Hmmm smells like battery acid!! So ... I open up the hood . . and low and behold ... the casing ( DC battery 4 years old warranty replacement ) had split about an inch down from the top on the aft side!! What a mess!! Paint bubbled up all over the inner fender well... battery tray and sides of battery wet with acid ... dusted everything with a heavy coat of baking soda let it sit while I ran to get a new battery and flushed everything with water... looks like I'll be ripping everything out of the drivers side for a re-paint. Damn ... Check your casings!

I've seen that happen to dead batteries if they're allowed to freeze, but never in the summer. My feeling is that the crack was there since the begining and finally opened up. To bad about the mess,I've thought of useing plastic battery boxes like you use on a boat,$9 insurance. Or use Optima batteries, they're not supposed to do that.

Just finished replacing both batteries this past weekend. Acid all over the place, had to remove battery trays and everything else that was close. I used warm water and baking soda to kill the acid, then plenty of water running slow to wash it all out. The acid had made a mess of the paint on the inside fenders, but after the baking soda and water and a good dry, I applied a good primer coat. It cleaned up real nice and pretty! Good luck on your cleaning job!!

Maybe all of us should pop the hood a little more often and check/admire/showoff that engine cavity more and we might catch a little acid problem before it gets bigger. Sorry for your troubles. I'm going Optima if/when it's needed.
