The stock batteries on my '95 are finally going out after five years of service. Anybody have any favorite brands or sources they'd like to share?

Ditto on the Optima batteries! Best batteries I have ever had and they really spin the motor even in cold weather.

Their was a thread awhile back about the Optimas.

It was recommended the Yellow Top Deep Cycle battery was a better choice than the Red Top starter battery for our trucks.

I`ll see if I can dig it up.

Found it. See this illflem: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/000125.html

I just added a pair of Optima Yellow Tops (top and side terminals). I'm very happy with them so far. I also got a screamin' deal on the pair as well. #ad

I thought I read somewhere that Optima had developed a new battery. It was smaller & lighter, and had more Cold Cranking amps.

I cant find info on it anywhere.

I looked like this: #ad

Found it!

Its Summit Part # ULT-9022-091
Smaller size
7 Lbs lighter
920 Cranking amps (not cold)
Red Top Starter Battery

The regular Red top & yellow top batteries have more Cranking amps (at 32 degrees, regular Red Top 80 amps more, Yellow top Deep cycle 30 amps more) Cant find a spec for the CCA on the new battery.

It may be more aimed for sub compact and compact car applications with limited room for a battery.

illflem, I purchased my Optima Yellow Tops at the local 4x4 shop in town (Enumclaw, WA), Auto Extras. If you ever find yourself on this side of the mountains you may want to consider them. They can be reached at: *82 (if you have call blocking) 360-802-0517 (ask for Brent... ask him for the same deal on a pair he gave me). #ad

Bill, If you have a hassle getting them over there, I can do a will-call pickup on this side and deliver them on a weekend trip. Let me know OK? Dave

Five years on a set of batteries. Lucky to get two summers on them here. Already on set # 2. DC replaced them no charge. Maybe I'll get one more set before 35k.

Steve,My Honda Accord has had the stock battery for nine years, and when I come to think of it 7 of my 9 tractors have batteries over 5 years old as does my other'95 3500. Wonder whats going on here, anybody know? Now that I said something they'll all probibly go out this month. With this kind of luck maybe I'm better off just skiping the Yellow Tops and just going to K-Mart #ad

Illflem,

If you have a G. I. Joe's over there on the east side of the mountians you might stop by, I just got thier flyer today and they have the red top Optima's for the best price that I have ever paid for them. Thier sale goes until 10/14/00. Drop me an email if you would like the exact price. I'm running two of the red tops in my rig with no problems.

If you guys east of the mighty Mississipp' are looking for an Optima, I highly recommend DC Battery Specialists in Miami, FL, especially if price is high on your list. I had one red top battery shipped to Memphis, TN for $116. Shipping to other areas is very reasonable, and may be an option for those on the west coast, as well??? They also stock a variety of other HIGH quality batteries. I do not work there or date the owner's daughter, and here is their website http://www.dcbattery.com. I do have a FEDEX Ground account, and if there is a lot of interest I might be able to buy a palletload and send all over the USA. You can buy from them almost as cheaply, though.

Josparkz, thanks for the info. Interstate wins hands down, less than $100 for Red Tops with 3 year free replacement,6 year prorated. Plus I only have to drive 7 miles to get two. With this deal I'll skip the Yellow tops and go for the Red. Thanks again.

What is the advantage with the Optima batteries? My buddy just picked up two batteries at Walmart for his 7. 3 Ford. $60 per with a two year replacement. I think around 1000 CCA.

With the demise of my batteries just around the corner with cold starts, I found that Costco is carrying the red top Optima's for $99. 99.

Darryl

I use just one battery so it would need to be a stud component. I installed a single redtop Optima/Intersate. Even with my recent problems (lift pump) I have not had to jump the Optima even though I cranked on it forever. This is a wonder battery that weighs only 39 lbs compared to the 61 lb stockers. I now use one 39 lb battery to do the work of the twin batteries at a total of 122 lbs. The Optimas are amazing IMO and I recommend them.
