2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Battery power draw question

Does this work?

If I do what others suggest,remove both negative terminals off batteries and attach a test light to battery and ground to see if it lights up. I also attach a amp meter and think I see a charge or draw of 12. 40 on the meter. Is this right? Is it a direct short?

12 amps would kill the batteries in around 2 days. A direct short would be around 1,000 amps and some smoke. A single headlight is around 4 - 5 amps.
