Auxiliary Lift Pump

Who is using the BD auxiliary lift pump? They say you keep your OEM lift pump and install the BD pump on the frame under the Driver's door.

Ken

BD is a company in Canada. I have their Exhaust Brake on my 2001 Dodge diesel. The Auxiliary lift pump has been in use for 5,000 miles. My OEM lift pump failed and the engine kept running until I had my spare Cummins lift pump installed. The fuel pressure indicates when the pump fails. Don't travel without a spare lift pump. http://www.dieselperformance.com/ram/index.php Bring up this page and then click on Lift Pump Kits. It explains and shows a picuture of the kit parts. http://www.hoeslidiesel.com/specials.htm sells the Cummins diesel parts.

I am quite familiar with the lift pumps and BD power. ;) I just needed to know which company you were referring to. The company you are talking about is BD power. Yes the way they are telling you to install it is the proper way. :D

Is there anyone here that uses the BDPower auxiliary lift pump kit which sells for around $265? It operates with OEM Cummings lift pump on 2001 Dodge diesels.

I have one installed. I installed mine under the drivers door on the frame directly above the cross frame brace that supports the skid plate.

Yes, I have a question. After installing my BD lift pump and driving 5,000 miles the fuel pressure gauge started jumping back and forth. This happened twice and the 2nd time it would not stay pegged at 15psi. I felt that my OEM lift pump was gone. I was not concerned about not having enough fuel, so several hundred miles latter I found a Diesel mechanic and had him install my spare Cummins lift pump which I always carry. Now the fuel pressure gauge reads a steady 15psi. By watching the fuel pressure gauge is a sure way to tell if the fuel pump fails. $245 for the BD aux. lift pump, $140 for the OEM pump and $90 for labor is not excessive amount if you can save the injector pump.

I didn't realize that I replied twice.

My gauge is showing the same thing. Usually it will be 15 psi or better, but occassionally it will drop to about 11 psi. I suspect the lift pump isn't doing it's job, I will be changing it out soon. My stock lift pump is not that old but I guess it doesn't take long for them to fail.

With the BD lift pump and a good stock pump you should be seeing about 25 psi. Your pressures are low for the parts you have,BTW the BD pump is a Carter :)

BD aux pump installation

How easy/hard is the installation?

Splicing/tapping required? or does it plug into the factory wiring?

My stock pump seems to be intermittant and I need to do something quick.

Do not want another stock pump that's sure to fail again.

Is there an aftermarket product that SIMPLY replaces the OEM.

similar in form & fit?

I'm in the process of doing a pusher pump install with a Carter 4600. On my install I'll be using a bypass around the pusher pump with a Carter check valve in it so if the pusher fails the OEM pump will still pull fuel. I purchased the check valve from Summit Racing because I found it to be recommended in a couple of TDR threads. Cost for the check valve was about $18. I'll let you guys know how it works.

I'm also installing a dash mounted on/off switch for the pusher so I can see which pump is bad if my pressure drops. The switch will be in the ground side of the relay which is activated by the OEM pump.

Good luck.
