I am considering getting a home brewing kit. I have a good idea on how to make beer(food science student at purdue university). I am open to any and all suggestions. I plan on brewing stouts, no need on putting in alot of time on wussy lagers. I have found a site that appears to be well priced midwest homebrewing supplies. They have starter kit for $50, and I would only need the yeast, grain, and bottles (I already have pots big enough to make the wort in). I thing the EZ-cap bottles would be easier to use, but they cost more, and might be harder to sterylize. And I dont need a cappimg machine or more caps for the next batch. But I can get 12oz bottles very easily (buy full ones #ad
). I have a cool basement to ferment in in the summer, so getting the yeast above optium temp aint too much of a problem.

If anyone has made their own beer, and have suggestions, give them to me. If you have equipment to make your own beer, and dont want it, TELL ME.

I used to make my own beer for awhile. Problem is the home brewed beer has a lot of sediment at the bottom which I didn't like. Could not get the flavor real consitent, even though I am pretty sure I made the mixtures the same. It will also have a tendency to foam more. It was a hassle to do and just went back to buying beer. I now use the plastic brewing container for a trash can.
 
I still have a ten gallon crock and maybe fifty Grolsh(ones with fliptops) bottles for sale. Quit drinking. Used cheese cloth for a filter when I bottled. Know a guy who uses coffee filters.

I have drank the homemade stuff. Not as good as store bought. Was made from a kit. I have drank homemade in Oklahoma made by some native americans,they call it chok or Homebrew. Man it was GOOD. I would like to try some homemade watermelon wine. I have had white lightin from tennessee also.

Oh yeah, do it, stouts come out good, just watch your temperature. Too high and it ferments too fast and ruins it. I'm in Calif. and high temps are an issue. If you have a basement do it there. The worst part is all the bottle cleaning. Bottles... go to a bar and take um or better yet have a PARTY!

My brother does homebrew, and his stuff is very good. I've watched, but don't know too much about it.

Tips from him:
1. Find a store, club, group, or friend who does it and visit them. Seeing and touching is much better than a book.
2. Don't dabble at it. Get the equipment to do it right.
3. Skip the individual bottles and go to co2 and 5-gallon soft drink dispensers. They're relatively inexpensive and no bottles.

My Mom and Dad used to make a awesome Dandelion wine. Easy going down,and then hit you like a ton of bricks. Can get you the recipe if you want.

Got a couple friends that do. Got'em some Grolsch bottles and let them do the work. I just sample the results.

Champane, I might hafta talk to you about geting some bottles, if I decide to geti into brewing.

Papa, I know a guy who homebrews, and intend on watchin him on how hw does it.

Gene, the honey doesnt stop a hangover, other fluids stop that. Either way, I intend on making a batch of irish stout or russian imperial stout or oatmeal stout. mmmm stout.
 
I will have to go see how many bottles I have left. I believe I still have a footlocker full. Also have a ten gallon crock pot. Ceramic is the best for brewing. I have had a hell of a time keeping my wife from planting in it.

5-gallon carboys (the glass water bottles) work great. And, acids used to be shipped in 6 1/2 gallon carboys which are the absolute best because you have extra room for gas and foam when brewing a 5 gallon batch.

Here's a tip on starting. Toast a slice of bread, let it dry, real dry, lay this on top of your mixture, put the cube of yeast in the middle of the slice of toast, it will keep most of the yeast particals or settlins out of the brew. After it starts working, skim the toast and whats left of yeast off the top. Makes for real clear brew.
