Best 285/75R16 Tire for the Money????

All right guys, looking for the best real world tire for the money in 285/75R16. By real world, I mean durability (in miles), wet and dry performance, quality (no cupping issues, out of roundness, etc. ), and of course price. Give me some mileage numbers to back up your claims.



Right now I am leaning towards a set of the Cooper Discoverer S/T for $570 out the door.



Are there any better alternatives out there. I like the look of the Bridgestone Dueler Revo, but all the dealers I talk are really proud of them ($170-$180 for the tire only).



Let me hear your tire experiences.

I really like the way my Pro Comp Xterrains look... I think I got out the door for between $690-$750



I just am not happy about the ~3 MPG loss...

The S/T's are pretty good, I like them. Mine have over 12,000 miles on them right now, and I dont think they are half gone yet. Maybe not the best in High mileage, but they are better than my 235/85-16 Maxxis Bravos-less than 20,000

This will be my 3rd winter on Cooper A/Ts, aprox. 25k miles on them and not more than half worn. Far better all around traction than the stock Michelins. I do switch back to the stockers for summer use because fuel mileage is better with the less aggressive treads. Good tires, under $600 total 3 years ago. JimG

Not that I doubt DavidPope, but I thought the bigger tires resulted in a MPG increase as it was less revolutions per mile? Did I miss something?

Vic - It depends on your gear ratio too. On my truck I gained mileage, but I have 4:10 gears, I think on the trucks with 3:54's they either stay the same or loose a little as they're running too low of an rpm to stay in the powerband. I like my BFG's 45k and they still have at least 65% tread left, but they're pricey. I think my next set will be the bridgestones because of what I've heard they last like the BFG's but don't have the price tag... and I think they look cooler

I've had a set of the BFG All-Terrains, and One set of the KO's. I found them to be of the highest quality. Got 60K miles out of the KO's. You may not want a 315, but discounttiredirect.com has 315/70/17's for $150.



I can't remember the exact name of the shop, but it's a little po-dunk tire place in m'boro. I used to work for Hunter Engineering when I was in college at MTSU. I would maitenance their alignment machines. They had a good reputation, and ALWAYS took meticulous care of their equipment. More than I can say for other shops around there. I'll give you directions on Sat if you'd like. They are located real close to Wal Mart... Rick Maggart Tire - Maybe???

Personally I hate Cooper tires and I will never own another set on any vehicle I own. It has been my experience that they are extemely poor quality tires.



As far as dollar/mile I think it is hard to beat the BFG AT's. Sure they cost a little more but they seem to wear pretty well even with the weight of the Cummins. JMHO

Jay I have had several sets of Bridgestone Dueler AT's and have been very impressed. I still have a set of 285's on another truck. I would have them on my truck now but 285 is their largest and I had to have 315's. This is my first set of BFG's and have been impressed with 5k on them. I looked into the Cooper's but could not look at a set. Southestern is a Cooper dealer but do not deal with them!!!!! I will give details at meeting.





My vote for 285 Bridgestone Revo's or Dueler AT's.

I have a set of Kelly AWR's on my truck. Have put 100K miles on them with no flats. Buying another set tomorrow morning. 4 Tires, mounted, balanced and installed is $600 including taxes.

Pebboys futura, not sure who makes them, possibly cooper. 89. 00 each for 285/75/16 Dakota's. They wear well, only downside is wet traction. The main reason I use them is cost, because I burn through a set every year. I haven't found a tire yet that likes to put down 500hp to the pavement every day!

NTW has 10 ply tires made by Cooper. which is owned by Goodyear, for $75 a piece with a ten dollar discount on each tire when you purchase four of them. I'm purchasing a set next month after I pay my income tax estimate.

I just bought a set of Yokohama HTS from DT with a 60k treadwear warranty for $126 each. Read the reviews/surveys on Tire rack, they rated better than Michelins on handling traction & the about the same for treadwear. Consumer reports says the rolling resistance is worse...



Edit: 2-05-06 after 55,000 miles I ran over some debris (furniture that fell out of the truck a couple of vehicles ahead of me) & got a few punctures on the edges of the left side tires. I had DT warranty & replaced them with Michelin LTX. My dad & another freind have gotten 80k plus from theirs so I upgrade because of the amount of miles I drive a year. The HTS would've easily made 60k, but DT made me a killer deal on a set LTX's because they didn't have the Yokahama's in stock (it pays to call ahead :-laf )

I did not have any issues with the HTS tires, the only puncture was the furniture, they wore evenly & were quiet.

I've had Cooper S/T's on my truck for years now and have no complaints. I average about 45,000 miles on 'em before replacement. Cost about $450 mounted, balanced, etc.

i second the pep boys futura dakota... i have them with 10k already and you can not tell i have driven on them. i am impressed to this point... i know there have been others use them as well.

I've got about a week on my Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's. I have been a die hard fan of the BFG AT KO's for years and decided to try something different. From the reading I've done they are equal to or better than the BFG's. I was mainly interested in the snow/wet weather traction.

So far the Revo's are quieter, and ride a little better. Looking forward to trying them in the snow.

My BFG AT KOs are at 55K right now and I can still squeeze a few more miles out of them. When new they're a little bad about picking up small rocks, but I think you're going to find that with any AT tire. As far as traction, they do better in the mud than I ever thought they would. They've pulled me out of a couple of bad situations before.
